They offer facility provision for a wide range of social interactions and provide habitats for flora and fauna. A classification of spaces would be useful in preparing public open space policies and fulfilling structure plan. This study aims to propose a comprehensive open space categorization using classification system for Malaysia. A deep investigation in sources in Malaysia reveals that there is lack of comprehensive classification of open spaces and just a hierarchy of open spaces presented. A critical literature review were carried out for this study to understand the approaches of this comprehensive classification and adapted them according to Malaysia context. In order to come up with a comprehensive classification in Malaysia, an analysis of comparison between several cities in different countries was done. The outcomes of the study will provide a systematic classification use for planner and policy makers in preparing open space strategies and in setting development plan policies. It is also useful for designers to obtain the best possible conceptual ideas when designing open spaces.

A closed landfill site can be an eyesore land and cause environmental hazardous impacts on surrounding areas. A sustainable solution for redevelopment of a closed landfill site, returns the land to an attractive and beneficial after-use. This study aim to identify potential sustainable solutions and factors in the redevelopment of closed landfill sites. The paper critically reviews the literature regarding vital understanding of the redevelopment process. The study also analyzed the successful landfill redevelopment projects in a wide range of time and locations to suggest the best end-use option. Additionally, the study offers an approach for integrating the social, economic and environmental benefits through the sustainable redevelopment solution contributing to the universal sustainable development and green built environment.

A landfill requires a piece of land and receive a huge amount of wastes for a certain period of time. Many landfills all around the world are located into or nearby urban areas where the land is scarce and highly demanded. Therefore, an important question arises on how to re-use this piece of threatening land. The aim of this study is to highlight the benefits of landscape work with the roles of landscape architects or equivalent disciplines to succeed a sustainable development of a landfill site not only after the landfill being closed but also from the beginning of it. To achieve this, a comprehensive investigation has been done among related literature to address these issues and prove that landscape work is one of the key factors that can lead a landfill project to a more successful and beneficial one which eventually makes the project sustainable. The findings of the study are useful for those who are engaging in landfill industries both practitioners and academicians and will contribute knowledge about sustainable development of landfill from a different perspective.

Its applications in land-based urban traffic network studies have been fruitful, but have suffered from the lack of a systematic cognitive and integration framework. This paper reviews complex network theory related knowledge and discusses its applications in urban traffic network studies in several directions. This includes network representation methods, topological and geographical related studies, network communities mining, network robustness and vulnerability, big-data-based research, network optimization, co-evolution research and multilayer network theory related studies. Finally, new research directions are pointed out. With these efforts, this physics-based concept will be more easily and widely accepted by urban traffic network planners, designers, and other related scholars.

When it comes to the benefits of urban green and open space, one should concern on the facilities provided to promote human or societal wellbeing, either directly or indirectly. In this study, a review of identified peer-reviewed literature from the most popular online databases was carried out and its contribution to improve our understanding of urban open green spaces and their environmental benefits to the human being are discussed. These many benefits cover various areas such as natural conservation which increases biodiversity of flora and fauna, affecting urban climate by reduction of air temperature and urban heat islands, improving air quality, decreasing air pollution and carbon sequestration, noise reduction and cleaning up contaminants. As urban open green spaces contribute to human and social well-being, they are essential for livable and sustainable cities.

There has been a global attempt by designers to spread the view that cities can be potential areas for producing loads of food required by communities and fitted for specific ecologies. A similar trend has been spread to developing countries where it is essential to provide food for local consumption, and serious attempts are made to distribute food materials to protect particular urban communities. Therefore, recent attempts of food security have aimed not only to guarantee availability but also the provision of sustainable, locally-fitted and food production that is not industrialized to sustain the potential for production. The solution seems to be Vertical Farming (VF). Producing food can be brought into cities through VF and this significant step, if taken, can make life in cities more viable. The present research aims to review the VF plays in the future of food production in high-density cities. The present research reviews the body of related literature, both online and printed publications on the issue. VF is a turning point of the millennium in urban designing but not limited to that. It further presents a new type of architecture as both a local and global remedy for the 21st crisis.
