various social fragments have organised independent protests and political strategies to defend their rights. However, in the absence of any sustainable social solidarity between the struggling groups, it becomes easy for
the right wing to retain its domination over electoral politics. The varied democratic protests would be relevant if they also build a sustainable
political alliance against the Hindutva forces.

The fi lm reopens the possibility that cinema can provide a grand platform to the damped voices of the passive citizenry without compromising on its commercial and entertainment quotients. Instead, its grand success showcased that the audience is equally entertained by the fi lm's bold anti-establishment rhetoric and can provide a high podium to the problems of the poor and marginalised people on the silver screen.

Major genres of Hindi cinema are stuffed with the Hindu-Brahmanical cultural values, social themes and political interests. The caste and question of Untouchability not even figured as the peripheral aspects of the cinema. The narratives revolve around certain abstract upper caste Hindu identities, divorced from the idea that in the actual Hindu social order caste distinctions play a crucial role. Bombay’s popular Hindi cinema though showcased artistic and intellectual agency by representing the problems of urban poor during its ‘Golden Age’ period, however the caste question is visibly ignored. Importantly, the problems of the Untouchables were discussed in the national political spectrum and the new Constitution offered them a new identity and special provisions to facilitate their entry into mainstream civil life, the Hindi cinema of 1950s neglected their concerns and voices under the infl...

However, the foundational mandate of the policy to examine to- gether the social, educational and eco- nomic backwardness of the group in or- der to make it a beneficiary of the reser- vation policy has been compromised and tampered. The decision on the EWS quo- ta has overtly disturbed the directive principle and introduced economic back- wardness as the sole criterion to avail the benefits, making it a policy for the bene- fits of the social elites only. The idea of “poor” may sound more universal and commonly linked to the vast depleted population, however, it is mainly moti- vated to uphold the upper-caste privileges and to complicate the established princi- ples of social justice policy.

An average cinemagoer understands that Bhagat Singh does not look like Ajay Devgan and Milkha Singh never had chiseled six pack abs that Farhan Akhtar has showcased in ‘Bhag Milkha Bhag’. We all know that Bollywood takes uneasy liberties to depict the legends or historic events and thus bring sensitive and emotional issues for public debate. So we have Amir Khan as Mangal Pandey- a drunkard who regularly visited brothels to meet his love interest, Priyanka Chopra, the dusky Miss World with no resemblance to Mary Kom acts as the boxing sensation from Manipur or Shekhar Kapur’s visual spectacle of violence and graphic nudity in ‘Bandit Queen’. Bollywood’s cinematic representation of history and legends in all its accounts has remained away from the authentic realities. Period Cinema in Bollywood is nothing but a creative entrepreneurship to provide a magical glimpse of our complex and unknowable past, packaged with entertainment quotient.
