On comparison with the calculations of Bohmer and Peyerimhoff for Ar(n)Xe+, we feel this data suggests that, in the case of Ar(n)H2O+, the water cation sits at the center of the argon cluster, representing the first example of an oxygen-containing molecule exhibiting such behavior. However, while Bohmer and Peyerimhoff predict a magic number for Ar12Xe+, we do not observe one for Ar12H2O+. We postulate that this difference may be due to the water cation distorting the structure of the solvating argons.

The measurement of the ionization efficiency (IE) curves have yielded a wealth of information by enabling ionization and appearance energies of ions to be determined which are essential for the calculation of thermochemical data. In the case of van der Waals clusters, the measurement of IE curves enables one to determine the qualitative trends in the ionization potentials as a function of cluster size. In addition IE curves have also offered valuable insight into ionization related processes occurring in clusters. This paper will cover some of the more recent studies of Penning ionization, exciton induced decay and Coulomb explosion in van der Waals clusters through the use of electron impact IE curves.

We have observed a high degree of reactivity of C60++ with oxygen to produce C60+, C6002+ and C600+. Likewise, we have also observed reactivity of C60++ with ammonia to produce C60NH2+, C60NH2(NH3)+, C60NH2(NH3)2+ and C60NH2(NH3)3+. We propose that the product ions result from an electron transfer reaction followed by covalent bond formation. All reactions were observed to be highly dependent on collision energy and target gas pressure. We believe that these processes are part of a larger family of charge exchange reactions for C60++, which occur for any molecule whose ionization potential lies below 12.25 eV, the first ionization potential of C60.

Laboratory testing has shown that the new coating can afford up to 336 hours of neutral salt-spray corrosion protection to AA2024-T3 and passes modified wet-tape adhesion tests. One particularly intriguing aspect of the new coating is its apparent ability to self-heal during salt-spray testing. A range of surface analytical methods was used to study the morphology and structure of the coating. It is postulated that the new coating contains vanadium rich inclusions in a zirconium hydroxide matrix. Self-healing is thought to arise from passivation of bare aluminum surfaces via leaching of vanadate, i.e. V5+, species from the coating during salt-spray testing.
