Jedi Chronicles: Rogue Assignment (original) (raw)

Twenty minutes after handing the datapad to Runya, master Tobbock was opening his sock drawer to find a surprise, “DARTH…” he cried looking around franticly trying to find the sith cat his padawan was so fond of. Runya entered his room at a brisk jog, “What is wrong master?”

“Your diabolical pet has stolen my socks again!” Tobbock exclaimed with a hint of frustration in his voice. Runya replied, “Do you always have to blame Darth every time this happens?” Tobbock looked at his padawan with a cockeyed stare, “Since when has is it not been your sith cat?”

“Well, I don’t know. What proof do you have?” Runya defended her position with yet another question, increasing her masters anger. Just at that moment Darth entered the room. “Well, how about that for proof?” Tobbock pointed to the cat that was covered in strings and the raveled remains of socks.

Runya replied jokingly, “He could have gotten those anywhere master.” The cat looked at the two jedi with huge watering eyes, and then made the one noise no cat owner wants to hear, “och-och-och-koosch,” and a glob of mucus coated tread lay on the floor at the cats feet. “Oh, now that is it. He is out of here,” Tobbock exclaimed as he bent over to pick up the cat, but Runya snatched him up first. “Oh, come on master, I’ll clean it up, and you can get new socks. He is sick, you can’t just throw him out.” Runya interjected in a sympathetic tone, and for a brief second Darth appeared to have a devilish smirk on his face. Runya turned to leave and Tobbock called behind her, “Fine! But you are going to clean this up, and you’re also going to get me new socks. Oh, and he stays locked in your room while we’re gone, you can have one of the temple droids feed him…don’t forget to leave plenty of paper…”

Less than an hour later Master Tobbock stood waiting on his padawan, gone to get him new socks, on the landing pad where their transport ship stood fueling. From behind he could feel the encroachment of a small creature, he turned and to his surprise he found Yoda, still a young jedi knight at this time. Tobbock greeted him, “Ah, Yoda, good to see you. Are you here to see us off?”

“To see you off, I have come yes. And, to give you warning,” the small green jedi replied.

“Warning, yes, I do worry about taking my padawan on such a mission, but if the council sees her fit, I cannot argue, she is strong in the force. No doubt about that.”

“Strong she is, but emotional. So Kun as a padawan as well. Fear he may tempt her…”

“No, Runya above all is kind hearted and good. The dark side of the force will not tempt her so easily, Yoda.”

“To much faith in your padawan, you have…”

“No, Yoda, I won’t hear of it, I trust Runya with my life. I know now that so many jedi, especially the padawans, have left us everyone is worried who, if anyone will be next. But Runya has stayed with us through all of this, and I know she will not leave. To be a jedi is her path, and she will not falter.”

“Blinded by your emotions, you are. You care too much for your padawan learner. The jedi code you must remember, ‘there is no emotion, there…”

“’There is peace,’ I know Yoda. I believe that we look too much to the old code, it is outdated, and entirely too strict. I also believe that is why so many have chosen to leave us, not for power or greed, but for freedom from an otherwise overwhelming code of conduct.”

“In this you may be correct, master Tobbock. Reflect upon this, I will.”

At this moment Runya returns with her master’s new socks. She hands him the back and looks down at Yoda. “Hello Yoda, good to see you.” Yoda replied, “Good to see you again it is, it has been a while now.” Runya turns back to her master, “ I hope you like them, I especially like the pink and green striped ones.”

“Ahgha…” Tobbock replied to his young padawan as he pulls out the pair in question and the stuff the entire bag into his back pack. “Well, it is time for us to be going,” Tobbock glances from Runya to Yoda. Yoda replied as he turned away, “That it is. A safe trip I bid you.” Runya and Tobbock pick up there things and make their way up the ramp of the transport ship.”

“So, master, I know we are going to the sith home world, but why would a ex-jedi padawan be there?” Runya looked puzzled. Tobbock placed his pack into a cargo locker and had a seat beside his padawan, then replied, “Well, Kun was once a padawan as it said in the file I gave you. A few years back he and his master, Master Baas, were on an assignment. They were attacked by a dark jedi insurgent, and Kun was thought, even by Baas, to be killed. However, Master Baas felt his presence again just three days ago while meditating. He believes Kun may be in danger, or worse he may have turned to the dark side. The place Baas felt his former padawan was in was a cave, on the sith home world.”

“Isn’t it dangerous for jedi to, well, just go to the sith world? I mean, aren’t they evil, and our enemies?” Runya looked at her master with doubt in her eyes. Tobbock replied slowly, “Well, yes, and no. Not all sith are evil, or even force sensitive…just most. Our job is reconnaissance, if we don’t use the force more than necessary they shouldn’t know we are there.”

Runya thought to herself for a moment, and then, after checking the energy level of her lightsaber power cell, she responded, “Well then…okay, Lets go!”
