Cherokee owners: are fuel system/fuel injection cleaners useful? What about oil additives? If so, which brands do you like? (I have a '95 automatic). Thanks in advance!

4:46PM - Problem/question

Hi!

Haven't seen any posts in here lately...

At any rate, I have a problem and the local mechanics don't seem to be too helpful. Abot half-way through a relatively long trip, the engine temperature went up into the red. I pulled over, let the engine idle for a bit, it went back down again. I let it cool off with the engine off for about an hour, then kept driving but a lot slower. The temperature was fine the rest of the way, but all of a sudden the "Service Engine Soon" light stated blinking; I could hear some strange noise in the engine and the way the car "feels" changed - it was a bit like trying to drive in a gear that is too high, doesn't quite work, even though I was only in second gear and going slowly it felt like I was trying to drive in the forth.

Anyway, at that point I was literaly five minutes away from where I needed to be, so I drove very slowly for those five minutes and parked. It was Friday evening, so the earliest I could get the car to the mechanic was Monday. It's a 30 minute drive at ~ 30 mph. 15 minutes into it, the service engine light starts blinking again and the noise returns. I left the car at the shop for them to look at, explained the problem and all. Now they tell me, that the light doesn't come on and they can't hear the noise and they have no problem driving it.

No, I didn't imagine the whole thing, my passanger heard the noise and felt the car move strangely as well.

It's a vague question... But any suggestions? Am I supposed to take the photo of the damn light blinking?

Thing is, the engine light has come on a couple of times before and I asked them to check it out; it never blinked before and the car was moving fine. They told me both times that its some sensor malfunctioning and I should just ignore it. Magically the car returned with the light off. What I don't want is some lasting damage 'cause the problem keeps being igonred...

Thanks in advance.

(The next nearest place to service Jeeps is ~ 1 hour away btw... Might even be the same owner... ).

4:47PM - Time to replace the clutch?

Hi!
I was wondering, when is it time to replace the clutch? My Jeep is approaching 240k, original clutch, and the way the gears are working feels a bit funny. Thing is, I have no idea how a worn-out clutch would feel like - is what I am feeling just the general wear-and-tear, or? Anyone?

4:01PM - _Happy Jeep, Happier Dave...,

This is the scene that greeted me when I walked out my door this morning.
My Jeep was in one of its natural elements, and was happy.
It took me about ten minutes to shovel a path to the driver's door.
It took the Jeep about twenty seconds to push through the plow berm and shake itself off in the road.

10:59PM - Headlamp help!

I need your help - I just burned out one of the stock headlights on my '97 Jeep Wrangler.

What do you guys recommend as a good replacement?

I'd like to avoid the "super-blindingly white" ones which are so popular on new cars.

I've checked Quadrtec.com, but there are so many I have NO clue what's the best choice.

I'd also like to do the repair myself, so it's gotta be something I can just, basically, swap out. I'm handy with a screwdriver, but don't want to do any rewiring/reconfiguring.

You guys helped me choose THE BEST tires, so I figure you might steer me in the right direction with headlights.

4:51PM - Question - backing up against obstacles

Fellow jeepers,

This is probably a little embarrassing, but...

I was trying to park on a curb - rear wheels on the curb, front wheels on the pavement below, the curb parallel to the axles. To may amazement, I was not able to back up onto the curb from this position, neither in 2WD nor in 4WD-high (didn't try the low gears). There was no problem driving (forward) up onto the same curb, but I did that diagonally, so one wheel at a time.

Question is, how do I do that properly (back up in this orientation)? Should I try to back up at an angle to the curb (that would have required to turn the steering wheel, and I was trying to keep it level out of fear of damaging the power steering)?

Thanks!

6:46PM - Jeeping Around

While visiting a friend in Clermont, I came across a local dealership that was hosting a Jeep event complete with a huge off road course.

Only time my Jeep got stuck while going through the medium difficulty course. I was really wishing that I had a locker for the front and rear as my front right was slipping and the left rear was well... In the air. Lol

Reminded me how much I love seeing what my vehicle can do which also makes me want to invest in mods for it.But for now the money goes into the bike so the Jeep will have to wait.

Current mood: silly

3:39PM - To chain or not to chain, this is the question

Hi!

Does someone have experience with tire chains on their Jeeps? I have a Wrangler Sahara, going up and high this winter... Wondering whether to chain up or not, and any advice on using chains you might have.

I've never used chains in the past and have always been fine. But, I suspect that there might be laws here in Europe which would make me use them, that is one (will find out). Two, I'd like to hear from other Jepers on the subject!

Thanks.

10:16PM - Can I interest anyone in a little talk about tire pressure?

So, all y'all remember I got new tires, right?

Well, now I need to know what's the best tire pressure for highway use.

I did the calculation - for the weight of my Wrangler and the new tires, I came up with 27-28 psi, which seems very low (and, in fact, at the current COLD 30psi, the bottom of the tire looks too bulgy to my untrained eye).

I think I'm going to try the chalk method tomorrow. Do any of you believe in the chalk method? It's to be done with warm, recently-driven tires, right?

I've heard it's "lower psi for off-road" to give better grip on gravel and dirt; "higher psi for highway and city streets." But higher or lower than what? Max cold pressure is 50psi for the BFGs - but I know you're not supposed to run at the max, especially when you're not carrying or towing any extra weight.

So, tire pressure anyone?

7:55PM - Thank you!

I just wanted to thank all y'all for helping me out.

I bought new tires today - and they are awesome! I went with the BFG All-Terrain T/A KO 30x9.5R15.

I've already driven about 30 miles on the new tires. They're really QUIET - which surprised me. The ride is smooth and the steering is responsive without being twitchy. Totally changed the feel of my ride for the better.

So... who wants beer?

12:41AM - I need a big, strong man to help me out!

Yes, that's right - step up, boys! I know when I'm in over my head and I'm not above asking for help. Especially when y'all are so smart and handsome and Jeep-knowledgeable.

I need new tires for my stock '97 Jeep Wrangler. I'm currently running p225/75R15. I want to upgrade to light truck tires - which means upping to 235 - and I'm fine with that.

But, there's SO MANY BRANDS! How do I narrow it down? How do I choose? I've read 100s of posts on forums and... It doesn't seem like it should be this difficult, but the more I read the more difficult the decision seems to get.

Mostly highway driving; must be good in rain and dry; some dirt/country roads; the sort of snow and ice you'd get in urban/suburban areas; no real off-roading; no mud puddles, swamps, bogs or sand dunes.

So, help? What would all y'all put on a stock '97 Wrangler?

8:37PM - Jeepin Shenanigans

Went out spring hunting with a friend last weekend which gave me an opportunity to get the Jeep's feet wet after a semi long hiatus from the trails.

6:55PM - Busted Hood Latch

Hi all - I have a 97 Wrangler and the rubber on my hood latch busted. But (according to the dealer) the part is on BACK ORDER INDEFINITELY.

I can't drive on the freeway because of how much play there is in the hood at speed. So, I gotta get this fixed!

Any suggestions on what I can do? Other possible sources for the part? Anything?

10:46AM - loud rattling jeep

hi all

my poor falling apart jeep is doing something that just can't be good for it. if i hit a hole in the road, or alternate holes in the road, the whole jeep starts shaking hard. it feels like the body of the jeep is shaking side to side on the wheels. i have to put my foot on the brake quick to stop it. it feels like if i didn't stop it, a corner would break and the jeep would lurch down in that corner. if that makes sense.

my jeep is on a 4 inch lift. i have no clue what part of it is broke to cause this. it doesn't happen if i both front wheels hit holes, only if one hits either first or alone. it doesn't feel safe at all. metal just can't rattle that hard and not break.

any clues anyone as to what it is that's broke that needs fixing?

thanks!

9:43PM - Repainting a Hard Top

My husband and I are looking at buying a used hard top for our Wrangler.

The top is black. Our Jeep is black. But our sliding windows are tan. We're thinking about painting the "new" top tan (if we go ahead w/the purchase).

Any advice on where to purchase paint? What kind of paint? Does JC Whitney or other Jeep parts supplier sell paint in the common Jeep colors?

5:09PM

Hey guys, just wanted to upload some pics of ole Underbite. He's unfinished, like I mentioned earlier... you can see the lovely hole in the front bumper that will soon have a winch placed inside. :D :D

His face >:

Along with a winch, I'm still looking for a good rear bumper with tire carrier. If anyone has any suggested brands or models, I'm all ears. :D

10:33PM - Hey, any JKs out there?

Hey everyone!

I bought a 2008 2-door Wrangler last September. Right now it's got 35'' Pro Comp extreme all terrain tires, a 2.5'' lift, and a new front bumper (Rugged Ridge modular bumper). I'd like to post a pic, but it looks very unfinished, lol. Still needs a winch, rear bumper with a properly sized spare, etc.

So much fun. People don't seem to post often here, make some noise y'all. :D
