Reducing Family Violence Through Child Welfare Intervention: A Propensity Score-Matched Study of Fathers for Change
Journal of Interpersonal Violence

It often co-occurs with child abuse and neglect. Most children referred to child protective services (CPS) have witnessed IPV and are at increased risk for subsequent exposure, as well as repeat maltreatment. For CPS referred children, there is often a missed opportunity to interrupt family violence and prevent future occurrences. Fathers for Change (F4C) is a family level intervention designed to reduce IPV by improving emotion regulation and reflective functioning in fathers. To date, no study has examined whether F4C is associated with reduced recidivism in families referred to CPS. Using propensity score matching (PSM) to simulate an experimental design, the current study tests the hypothesis that families with fathers who completed F4C will have significantly lower rates of new CPS reports over a 12-month period compared to a PSM sample of families of fathers not referred...

Patients with SCD often suffer airway hyper-reactivity, acute chest syndrome (ACS), chronic lung disease, pulmonary hypertension (PHTN), and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Recent literature has provided evidence supporting the strong association between asthma and airway hyper-reactivity in SCD. One of the factors linked to chronic inflammation and asthma is iron status. The present study examined whether iron levels are associated with pulmonary complications in pediatric patients with SCD. Method:Through retrospective review of electronic medical records (EMR) we evaluated patients with diagnosis of asthma and SCD. All patients with available PFT (3/21/2013-3/11/2020) and iron studies were included in the analysis. Chi square and ANOVA tests were used to explore relationships of respiratory conditions with lab data and relevant medical...
The Effect of Splenectomy on Development of Cerebral Vasculopathy in Children with Sickle Cell Disease

The most common splenic event is acute splenic sequestration crisis (ASSC) which has been often managed with surgical splenectomy. Although splenectomy has been the treatment of choice for years, the long term complications of splenectomy on vascular events has not been broadly assessed. It has been reported that splenectomy could lead to vascular complications and increased risk of thrombosis in chronic hemolytic conditions. As it was proposed, it could be partially due to the shift form extravascular hemolysis to intravascular leading to the scavenging of nitric oxide (Kato et al, 2007). In terms of cerebral vasculopathy in children with sickle cell disease, screening is usually done by measuring blood flow velocity in the main cerebral arteries using Transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography (TCD). In 2014 Peter Soh and Abdul Siddiqui reported a...

Nearly 30% of children with SCD have had one episode of ACS, with the incidence higher in early childhood. The proposed pathophysiology of ACS is thought to be multi-factorial, with pulmonary fat embolism or infectious etiology being identified in a large number of patients. Increased sickling due to hypoxemia or pain has been shown to place patients at risk for ACS development., Studies have shown an increase in inflammatory...

The article describes the methodology used to establish the voltage duratlon and magnitude of VLF (0.1 Hz) high voltage field tests suitable for crosslinked polyethylene @WE) Insulated power cable. The results show that the voltage breakdown of laboratory aged XLPE cable at 0.1 Hz Is approximately equal to that at 60 Hz, that proof tests at 0.1 Hz cause very little damage to the cable, and that 0.1 Hz testing appears to be a satisfadory alternate to dc testing. Preliminary values are SUggeStQd for voltage magnitude and time duration of cable acceptance, maintenance and proof tests at 0.1 Hz for XLPE cable ratad up to 35 kV. A program is underway to similarly evaluate samples of serviceaged XLPE cable; as well as to demonstrate the use of the preliminary test values at typical utility installations.

Multiple cells and molecules involved with the inflammatory cascade play a role in the development of ACS. We found that patients with SCD who developed ACS as a complication of a vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) had a significant increase in leukocytes and decrease in platelets from their steady state when compared with a separate admission for VOC without ACS development. No significant change from steady state hemoglobin or reticulocyte count was noted between the two admissions. These results indicate that trending laboratory markers may be useful to predict patients at risk for ACS development.

However, whether one sensing polarity confers additional advantage over the other is not known. Objectives: To determine whether one sensing polarity is superior to the other for the detection of VF. Methods: Patients were enrolled into a prospective randomized study of sensing of VF and R waves in normal rhythm. Sensing of VF was determined by number of under sensed beats (USB), and time to detection of VF (TDVF). Each patient underwent ICD implantation followed by testing of the ICD. At each induction, patients were randomized to sensing in extended bipolar (EBP) or true bipolar (TBP) configuration. Additionally, R waves were compared at implant and at 1-month follow-up. Results: A total of 50 patients were enrolled into the study. When evaluating the primary endpoint, no difference was found between USB in

Meconium from 621 consecutive newborns delivered at two university-affiliated urban hospitals were assayed for benzoylecgonine. Maternal and infant characteristics were linked anonymously with the results. Statistical analysis included t test, Fisher's exact test, Duncan's multiple range analysis, and analysis of covariance, with a value of p < 0.05 considered significant. We found that 3.4% of meconium samples had benzoylecgonine levels exceeding 0.1 micrograms/ml. Its presence was statistically correlated with maternal and neonatal characteristics. A nurse's opinion of cocaine use was correct 22% of the time. Prenatal cocaine use was statistically associated with multiparity, multigravidity, late-onset and clinic-based prenatal care, public assistance, nonwhite race, and low academic achievement. A nurse's opinion was a poor predictor of maternal cocaine use. Cocaine-exposed infants were significantly smaller, and this correlated best with nonwhite background.

While discrimination has been associated with poor mental health, little is known about the relationship between discrimination and mental health outcomes in youth nationally. Furthermore, mental and behavioral health consequences of discrimination may differ in different minority groups. The goal of this study is to determine (1) how common perceptions of discrimination are in a nationally representative sample of African-American (AA) and Afro-Caribbean (AC) teens, (2) the relationship between discrimination and mental health conditions, and (3) whether discrimination has different associations with mental health in AA and AC youth. Cross-sectional comparison study SETTING: National Survey of American Life-Adolescent Supplement, a nationwide sample of African-American and Afro-Caribbean youth drawn from a nationally representative household survey of AA and AC population PARTICIPANTS: One thousand, one hundred and seventy AA and AC youth between 13 and 17 years EXPOSURE: Experiences with discrimination (Everyday Discrimination Scale) MAIN OUTCOMES: Lifetime and past 12-month major depression and anxiety RESULTS: Ninety percent of AA and 87% of AC youth experienced discrimination. Discrimination was significantly associated with lifetime and 12-month major depression and lifetime and 12-month anxiety. There were no differences in the associations between discrimination and mental health between AA and AC youth except for lifetime anxiety: as discrimination increased, the likelihood of lifetime anxiety disorder increased at a higher rate among AC youth compared to AA. Discrimination is a common psychosocial stressor in African-American and Afro-Caribbean youth. It is associated with poor mental health outcomes. There was no difference in the occurrence of discrimination between African-American and Afro-Caribbean youth or in its mental health consequences.
