Efforts are on the way for the development of efficient OCR systems for Indian languages, especially for Kannada, a popular South Indian language. We present in this paper an OCR system developed for the recognition of basic characters (vowels and consonants) in printed Kannada text, which can handle different font sizes and font types. Hu’s invariant moments and Zernike moments that have been progressively used in pattern recognition are used in our system to extract the features of printed Kannada characters. Neural classifiers have been effectively used for the classification of characters based on moment features. An encouraging recognition rate of 96.8% has been obtained. The system methodology can be extended for the recognition of other south Indian languages, especially for Telugu.

This paper presents a bilingual OCR system for printed Kannada and English text. Gabor filter based features are used for separating the Kannada and English words from the bilingual document. Wavelets that have been progressively used in pattern recognition are used in the system to extract the features for classifying both the Kannada and English characters. Multilayer feed forward Neural classifiers known for their good generalization and approximation property have been effectively used in the system for the classification. An overall recognition rate of 90.5% is obtained at character level.

Smart vehicles are the order of the day. Such vehicles have the ability to warn drivers of pending situations, remind them of speed limits and even automatically take evasive action. Due to the visual nature of existing infrastructure, signs and line markings, image processing will play a large part in these systems. In this paper we present an automated Traffic sign recognition system allowing an invariance localization to changes in position, scale, rotation, weather conditions, partial occlusion, and the presence of other objects of the same color. The reliability demonstrated by the proposed method suggests that this system could be a part of an integrated driver warning and assistance system based on computer vision technology.
