From ESR spectra, the spin Hamiltonian parameter values indicate that the ground state of Cu2+ is dx2−y2dx2−y2 and the site symmetry around the Cu2+ ion is tetragonally distorted octahedral coordination. Bonding parameters calculated from optical absorption and ESR data are found to change with alkali oxide and TeO2 content. Bonding parameters indicate a slight covalency for the in-plane σ bonding as compared to in-plane and out-of-plane π bonds. Both Raman and IR results show that glass network consists of TeO3, TeO4, BO3, BO4 and RiO4 group as basic structural groups. BO3–BO4− ring structure interconnected by TeO3− and TeO4− groups, where the BO4− groups are neighbors of the TeO3− groups. BO3 → BO4 transition is also observed, which correlates with the transition of TeO4 → TeO3 via TeO3+1.

Raman and infrared spectroscopies have been employed to investigate the xLi 2 O-(40 À x)Bi 2 O 3-... more Raman and infrared spectroscopies have been employed to investigate the xLi 2 O-(40 À x)Bi 2 O 3-20CdO-40B 2 O 3 glasses in order to obtain information about the competitive role of Bi 2 O 3 and B 2 O 3 in the formation of glass network. IR and Raman spectra show that these glasses are made up of [BO 3 ], [BO 4 ] and [BiO 3 ] pyramidal and [BiO 6 ] octahedral units. The formation of CdO 4 in tetrahedral coordination was not observed. The optical absorption studies revealed that the cutoff wavelength decreases while optical band gap energy (E opt) increases. The average electronic polarizability of the oxide ion (a O 2À), optical basicity K(E opt), and Yamashita-Kurosawa's interaction parameter A(E opt) were also examined.

Glass transition temperatures were measured with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and found to be in the range of 300–370 °C. The Raman spectra showed a cleavage of the continuous TeO4 (tbp) network by breaking of the Te-O-Te linkages. The relative transition of TeO4− groups to TeO3− groups is accompanied by a change in the oxygen coordination of the boron from 3 to 4 (BO3− to BO4−). The impedance plots Z″(ω) versus Z′(ω) for all the glass samples were recorded and found to exhibit a single circle. The AC conductivity of all glass samples was studied in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 1 MHz and in the temperature range from room temperature (RT) to 375 °C. The AC conductivity decreased by about one order in magnitude with increasing B2O3 content. The conductivity was found to be on the order of 10−4.5 to 10−6 (Ωcm)−1 at 375 °C and 1 MHz for 10 mol% and 50 mol% B2O3 contents, respectively. The relaxation behavior in these glass samples is discussed based on the complex modulus and impedance data.

Density measurement is carried out by Archimedes principle. Variation in glass transition temperature is discussed in terms of physical parameters. ESR results show that g > g ⊥ indicating that the Cu 2+ ions is in tetragonal distorted octahedral site and its ground state is d x 2 −y 2. There are considerable changes in g , g ⊥ and A values with increasing the concentration of CdO in BCT glass systems. The optical absorption spectra results show that the absorption peak of Cu 2+ is a function of composition. The observed optical absorption peak of Cu 2+ has been found to be minimum at 776 nm for x = 30 mol.% of CdO content. The variations in the physical, optical and bonding parameters clearly indicate the structural changes in the present glass system with varied CdO content.
