Prime Minister Mori’s visit to India in 2000 began a new era in the India–Japan partnership, resu... more Prime Minister Mori’s visit to India in 2000 began a new era in the India–Japan partnership, resulting in a surge in Japanese aid and investment into India. Japanese aid facilitated infrastructure development, health, water and sanitation programmes of India. Japanese investment also predominantly flowed into the automobile and the electronic sectors. The relationship followed the standard practice that was witnessed in Japan’s relations with other countries in Asia. However, Koizumi’s visit in 2005 brought a ‘strategic’ component into the purview of the India–Japan partnership. From 2010 onwards, especially with Shinzo Abe’s ascendency as the premier of Japan in 2012, this relationship further strengthened the strategic trajectory. The paper first gives a brief history and comparison of Japanese foreign direct investment into I... more The paper first gives a brief history and comparison of Japanese foreign direct investment into India and other Asian countries, highlighting the fact that Japanese investment into India is quite low. It then outlines the research objectives and explains the methodology followed. Second, the firm’s entry strategy is discussed to highlight how the Japanese view business partnerships. Third, attention is drawn to the obstacles faced by the firms which have been selected for the study and their responses to such obstacles. [ICRIER WP No. 243].

This system is centred on 'elimination of waste' which could be in the form of large amounts of inventory, defective products andoperational time. The techniques pursued for eliminating wastes are: 'Just in time', 'Total quality control' and 'Continuous improvement'. Knowledge harvessing in Japenese multinationals has been presented through the suggestion system and quality circle in operation at Honda Japan and Sanyo Japan and their venture operations in India. Two case studies have been presented - one of Honda Japan and the Hero Honda and the other of Sanyo Japan and BPL-Sanyo. It has been concluded from these case studies that in Japan knowledgement management in the form of knowledge harnessing is taken care of by virtue of implementation of Japanese techniques.
