Moving beyond the philosophy of science, and taking insights from history, anthropology, sociology, and psychology, as well as many important philosophical thinkers, Rogers explains the origins of science and the reductionistic metaphysics on which it depends. He explains why it has led to an impoverished view of Nature as something valued only in terms of its instrumentality as a material substratum for human existence. As an alternative, the author calls for a deeper and more meaningful ecological and spiritual conception of the natural world.

This view has also become part of the Republican Party platform. During his presidential election campaign, Ronald Reagan ran on a promise to abolish the DoE and return control over education to the states. After Reagan reneged on his campaign promise, the Republican Party dropped the abolition of the DoE from its platform until Newt Gingrich became Speaker of the House and spokesman for the GOP opposition in 1994. By 1996, once again, the abolition of the DoE on the grounds of its unconstitutionality was central to the GOP platform.
