Stereo imaging with needle detection can be made sufficiently robust and accurate to serve as primary navigation input. We describe the low-cost, easy-to-use approach used in the Clear Guide ONE generic navigation accessory for ultrasound machines, outline different available guidance methods, and provide accuracy results from phantom trials.

Despite the existence of 3D ultrasound probes, most analysis and diagnostic procedures are done by studying the B-mode images. Currently, multiple ultrasound probes include 6-DOF sensors that can provide positioning information. Such tracking information can be

This data can be acquired by traditional imaging modalities like e.g. computed tomography (CT), the current gold standard due to its high precision. With such imaging data, access trajectories, implant positions, individual milling paths etc. can be computed. We present an ultrasound-based method to generate 3D image data which is equally suited for many interventions, but less costly than CT and real time. The method’s feasibility is demonstrated for robot-based implant bed milling in the lateral skull base.

The correlation between two images is related to their distance by calibrating the ultrasound probe: the probe is moved with an accurate stage (or with a robot in this work) and images of a phantom are collected, such

Common probe tracking approaches involve either global tracking mechanisms (suffering from jitter and complexity) or local tracking algorithms (e.g. image-based, suffering from drift). We propose to use a combination
