In many practical engineering problems, the objective function is nonconvex and discontinuous, with the presence of multiple strong local minima, and the classical optimization methods may sometimes be trapped by the local minimum during the analysis. In cases where a strong local minimum is present in the solution domain, the commonly adopted heuristic global optimization method may fail to work properly, which has been seen by the authors. In this chapter, coupled optimization methods developed by the authors are reviewed, which are demonstrated to be suitable for such difficult cases. The mixed optimization algorithm can take the advantage of different optimization algorithms, and it is demonstrated to be effective and efficient in solving a very complicated hydropower problem with a high level of confidence.

This paper investigates the feasibility of using machine learning (ML) based MPPT techniques, to harness maximum power on a PV system under PSC. In this study, certain contributions to the field of PV systems and ML based systems were made by introducing nine (9) ML based MPPT techniques, by presenting three (3) experiments under different weather conditions. Decision Tree (DT), Multivariate Linear Regression (MLR), Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), Weighted K-Nearest Neighbors (WK-NN), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Bagged Tree (BT), Naïve Bayes classifier (NBC), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) performances are validated and proved using MATLAB SIMULINK simulation software. The experimental results demonstrated that WK-NN performs significantly better when compared with other proposed ML based algorithms.

This article outlines a methodology for the parameterization of interval type-3 membership functions using vertical cuts applied to the dynamic parameter adaptation of the differential evolution algorithm and implemented in an interval-type 3 Sugeno controller. This methodology was applied to the dynamic adaptation of the F (mutation) parameter in differential evolution to improve the performance of this method as the generations occur. To test the type-3 fuzzy differential evolution algorithm, the optimal design of a type-3 Sugeno controller was considered. In this case, the parameterization of the type-3 membership functions of this Sugeno fuzzy controller was performed. The experimentation is based on the application of three different noise levels for validation of the efficacy of the method and performing a comparison study with respect to other articles in the literature. The main idea is...

Building construction has the capacity to make a major contribution to a more sustainable future of our World because this industry is one of the largest contributors to global warming. The use of cold-formed steel framing in construction industry provides sustainable construction which requires less material to carry the same load compare to other materials and reduces amount of waste material at a site. In this study five optimum design algorithms are developed for cold-formed steel frames made of thin-walled sections using the recent metaheuristic techniques. The algorithms considered are firefly, cuckoo search, artificial bee colony with levy flight, biogeography-based optimization and teaching-learning-based optimization algorithms. The design algorithms select the cold-formed thin-walled C-sections listed in AISI-LRFD (American Iron and Steel Institution, Load and Resistance Factor Design) in such a way that the design constraints specified by the code are satisfied and the weight of the steel frame is the minimum. A real size cold-formed steel building is optimized by using each of these algorithms and their performance in attaining the optimum designs is compared.
