Le numéro spécial Études spatiales critiques : définir un champ émergent traite de l’urgence de repenser de manière critique les discours et les imaginaires qui sous-tendent l’exploration spatiale contemporaine. En mettant en avant l’interaction entre la représentation culturelle et l’investissement idéologique plutôt qu’en s’interrogeant sur les questions de faisabilité technologique, ce numéro jette les bases des études critiques sur l’espace extra-atmosphérique en tant que domaine interdisciplinaire émergent. De manière significative, les contributeurs rassemblent des perspectives issues des études littéraires et culturelles, de la théorie politique, des études de genre, des études scientifiques et technologiques et de l’astronomie afin d’examiner comment les discours et les représentations de l’exploration spatiale peuvent remettre en question les aspects hégémoniques et discriminatoires et ouvrir la voie à des imaginaires alternatifs et éthiques. Ce numéro spécial appelle donc à un changement de paradigme, s’éloignant des récits d’expansion et d’évasion pour s’orienter vers des approches écologiques et axées sur la justice des imaginaires cosmiques de l’humanité. En situant l’exploration spatiale dans des contextes culturels et politiques plus larges, le domaine émergent des études critiques sur l’espace extra-atmosphérique que ce numéro tente de présenter démontre le rôle essentiel des sciences humaines et sociales dans la façon dont nous (ré)imaginons l’avenir de l’humanité au-delà de la Terre.

The special issue Critical Outer Space Studies: Framing an Emerging Field addresses the urgency of critically rethinking the discourses and imaginaries that underpin contemporary space exploration. By foregrounding the interplay between cultural representation and ideological investment more than questioning issues of technological feasibility, this issue lays the groundwork for Critical Outer Space Studies as an emerging interdisciplinary field. Significantly enough, the contributors bring together perspectives from literary and cultural studies, political theory, gender studies, science and technology studies, and astronomy to examine how discourses and representations of space exploration can challenge hegemonic and discriminatory aspects and open avenues for alternative, ethical imaginaries. This special issue thus calls for a paradigm shift, away from narratives of expansion and escape, and toward ecological and justice-oriented approaches to humanity’s cosmic imaginaries. By situating space exploration within broader cultural and political contexts, the emerging field of Critical Outer Space Studiesthat this issue attempts to introduce demonstrates the vital role of the humanities and social sciences in shaping how we (re)imagine humanity’s future beyond Earth.
