- 🎉MOL Presents Long-service Awards, Hosts Family Day to Reward Filipino Seafarers🎉 Magsaysay MOL Marine (MMM) held a a long-service awards presentation ceremony for Filipino seafarers who work for MMM in Manila, and hosted a Family Day event on November 8th to show appreciation to them who form the foundation of our safe operation and their families who support them. MOL Executive Vice President Hirofumi Kuwata and several MOL Group ship management companies attended both the awards presentation and Family Day. Awards and recognition went to seafarers with 15 years of service aboard MOL-operated vessels, and a total of 70 award recipients and their families attended. The Family Day event is an annual event to express gratitude to the seafarers’ families who support seafarers on a daily basis. We hold the event in various locations in the Philippines, the largest one in 2024 was held in Manila, with 3,227 seafarers and their families. Taking this opportunity, we would like to thank again to all the seafarers, their families and MMM for their contribution to our safe operation ! Through these programs and in other countries that are home to seafarers, it expresses its gratitude for the significant contributions of seafarers who work far away from their families, and their families as well, with the aim to achieve successful coexistence among everyone in the MOL Group and in the sustainable growth and development of communities, and the group will strive to foster a culture of safety while recruiting and developing highly skilled seafarers. - Great thanks to Odfjell Oceanwind for inviting our CEO Takeshi Hashimoto to their facility ! Odfjell Oceanwind AS (OOW), our strategic partner for offshore wind business, and we have been working together since 2023 to realize the floating offshore wind. Relevant Press Release : https://lnkd.in/gyTvKchYNot only having some meetings in their head office, but also the tour on Odfjell Drilling’s semi-submersible drilling unit, “Deepsea Yantai” was hosted, which provided us with much better understanding on Odfjell’s operations & philosophies. MOL will continue to support for the realization of the projects, especially #GoliatVIND and #UtsiraVIND #shipping #OOW #offshorewind
Visit from Japan🤩 Last week CFO and Deputy CEO Eirik Knudsen, VP operations Håkon Hernes and CTO in Odfjell Drilling Håkon Klepsvik, had the pleasure of welcoming CEO & President of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., Takeshi Hashimoto, and some of his management team to our office in Bergen. We also invited them for a visit on Odfjell Drilling’s semi-submersible drilling unit “Deepsea Yantai” where the visitors were introduced to Odfjell’s operations and operational philosophies. We would like to thank the MOL team for their strong commitment to Odfjell Oceanwind.🤝 #floatingwind #offshorewind #collaboration - Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) is leading the new way in sustainable shipping with its cutting-edge technology, Wind Hunter Project, which aims to create green hydrogen production vessels and bring green hydrogen energy to shore for usage. Wind Hunter is utilizing MOL’s innovative Wind Challenger hard sails as one of the key technologies. Wind Hunter vessel operates as a movable hybrid power plant, combining offshore wind energy with hydrogen production. It can sail to windy sea areas to generate hydrogen and then change into Methylcyclohexane (MCH), a hydrogen carrier. MCH is easy to handle, store, and transport onboard even with the conventional tank specifications. Green hydrogen production vessel, a small plot type, will be ready for demonstrations in Tokyo Bay in the year of 2025 with the collaboration of Tokyo Metropolitan government. In addition to creating its own propulsion power, the Wind Hunter Project is part of MOL's broader vision to establish a global hydrogen supply chain, delivering clean hydrogen to meet energy demands worldwide. The project is a key step in MOL's "Green Ocean Shift," a strategy to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable development. MOL is proud to be a Bronze Partner of the "Future Life Expo: Future City" at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. At this exhibition, MOL will showcase the Wind Hunter Project, highlighting new possibilities in sustainable marine transport and demonstrating how advanced technologies like green hydrogen production can contribute to a zero-emission future and the achievement of global sustainability goals. By leveraging advanced technology, MOL envisions a future where hydrogen is produced at sea and transported to land, powering not only urban ports but also rural and remote regions. This project, which includes the possibility of unmanned ships, represents MOL’s commitment to building a sustainable future and a zero-emission shipping industry. - 【Co-hosting Shanghai International LNG Shipping Forum with COSCO!】 It was our pleasure co-hosting the sixth Shanghai International LNG Shipping Forum in Shanghai with China's leading energy shipping company, COSCO SHIPPING Energy Transportation Co. (CSET). This annual forum provides an opportunity for leading companies and organizations in the LNG industry to exchange knowledge and share points of view. The theme of the forum was "Safety and Development of the LNG Industry Chain and Supply Chain" and the event attracted nearly 200 participants. It featured speeches and presentations by representatives of leading companies and organizations in the industry. Speakers' topics included the LNG market and environmentally friendly new technologies. MOL President & CEO Takeshi Hashimoto emphasized that LNG will continue to play an important role as a clean energy source for decarbonization, and gave a presentation on the Wind Challenger (hard sail wind propulsion system), which utilizes wind power to propel vessels. In partnership with CSET, who is the co-host of this forum, MOL jointly owns a total of 20 LNG carriers and has collaborated on a number of LNG projects. - 【Verification Vessel by 2027 and Commercial Vessel by 2030】 - MOL's Wind Hunter Project ⑤ The Wind Hunter as a project is still in its experimental phase, but there is already a roadmap leading to "Stage 2 (Verification Vessel)" and "Stage 3 (Commercial Vessel)". In Stage 2, targeted for completion by the end of FY2027, a "medium-sized hydrogen production vessel will be constructed to verify the economic feasibility and safety of a large commercial vessel." Specifically, this involves building a ship about 60~70m (approx. 196.9~229.7 ft) long and includes: 1. Developing plant technology for efficiency 2. Key component efficiency evaluations such as numerous sails interference, water electrolysis, etc 3. Safety assessment as a ship Following this in Stage 3, targeted for around 2030, the construction of commercial vessels will begin. These commercial vessels will be over 200m (approx. 656.2 ft) long. "There are still many technological challenges, such as developing technology to produce pure water from seawater for hydrogen production and developing underwater turbines for power generation that operate optimally at the anticipated ship speed," says Kentaro Shima, project leader and General Manager of the Technology Research Center at Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL). The conceptual plan envisions the commercial vessels as unmanned ships in the future. They will autonomously head towards areas with favorable wind conditions, navigate and produce hydrogen there, and then automatically proceed to designated locations. Upon arrival at port, drones will carry the mooring lines to shore, MCH will be unloaded, toluene will be replenished, and the ship will move to the next optimal wind area to resume hydrogen production. One of the necessary technologies for this is the "ability to hunt the wind". This involves a "Long-Range and Real-Time Wind Condition Measurement Device Doppler LiDAR", which can visualize wind conditions in real-time by emitting laser light into the atmosphere and receiving scattered light from aerosols (dust and particles) in the air. The device can detect wind direction and speed within a 15km (approx. 9.3 miles) radius, and based on this data, the ship can “hunt” the optimal wind. Verification of observation accuracy and practical challenges are currently ongoing with a ship on the Tokyo-Fukuoka trading route. There are still many challenges to be solved, but taking on challenges is what we do at MOL. If you don't take the first step, you'll never reach your goal. This journey charts a direct route to the future.
