Among the neoplastic lymphoid diseases, the distinction between leukemias and lymphomas is merely in the general tissue distribution of the disease with varying and mixed presentations at times. The broad group of lymphomas has been segregated into two types - Hodgkin’s and Non Hodgkin lymphoma. This differentiation is of great importance as each type is clinically and histologically different and unique from each other. Further, they are treated differently and hence of utmost practical importance. This article gives an overview of the Hodgkin’s lymphoma, discussing its classification, clinical and histological features and various treatment modalities.

It is the most common salivary gland tumor which accounts for 54-65% of all salivary gland neoplasias and 80% of the benign salivary gland tumors. It mostly affects the parotid gland, followed by the submandibular gland and the minor salivary glands. Myoepithelial cell, being capable of dedifferentiation, metaplasia and transdifferentiation has a key role in the genesis of these tumors. The histopathologic picture may show squamous, mucous, and sebaceous and oncocytic metaplasia, sometimes with the formation of extensive keratin filled cysts lined by squamous epithelium. Metaplastic process is mainly triggered by trauma and probable etiology is ischemia. Extensive metaplasia can be mistaken for malignancy either mucoepidermoid carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. An unusual case of pleomorphic adenoma presented as a solitary intraoral palatine mass in a 62 year old male is reported here in which extensive ...

It is seen as a common entity in the head and neck region. Although lipomas are the most common tumors of mesenchymal origin in human body their occurrence in the oral cavity is rare. Intraoral lipomas may be noticed only during routine dental examination as most of them are asymptomatic and hence delay in seeking treatment. The etiology is still unclear. Various different theories explain the pathogenesis of this adipose tissue tumor. Based on histopathological findings, variants of oral lipoma have been identified. This article presents a comprehensive review of different types of lipomas of the oral cavity as it is important for an oral physician to diagnose intraoral lipomas and treat them conservatively.

It is a well-known fact that some systemic diseases have oral manifestations and that local oral disease may be related to an underlying systemic disorder. Recognizing that oral lesions may be the initial presenting sign during early stages of systemic disease may allow more efficient diagnosis of that underlying disorder. Under the umbrella of such systemic disorders with oral presentation is the increasingly recognized entity characterized by persistent and/or recurrent labial enlargement, oral ulcers and a variety of other oro-facial features called as “Granulomatous Lesions”.

The co-infection not only accelerates the HIV progression but also creates complication in treating patients with HIV. Although there are studies on seroprevalence of HIV, HBV and HCV, similar study is lacking in Mysuru city. The aim of the present study was to estimate the hospital based seroprevalence of HBV and HCV among HIV seropositive patients.

Nutrients are biochemical substance that can be supplied only in adequate amounts from an outside source, normally from food. Nutrition is relatively a new science, still an evolving process. Psychological factors such as preference for taste and social factors such as habit, ethnic heritage, tradition and values that enter into frequent decisions concerning food choices are important aspects of nutrition. As a body of knowledge, dietetics and nutrition has expanded to impact many segments of health care. Oral health and nutrition have a synergistic bidirectional relationship. Scientific and epidemiological data show a lifelong synergy between nutrition and the integrity of oral cavity in health and disease.

The HBV infection comes under World Health Organization target towards its complete eradication by 2020 [1,2]. As per reports, approximately 2 billion people suffer from HBV infection and around 280 million are carriers of HBsAg with virus harboured in their liver [3]. The infectious HBV has dsDNA which encodes for P, X, core, and surface proteins. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is a complex surface antigen of HBV and important marker of past or present infection of HBV [4]. HBsAg can be detected 2 to 5 weeks before the actual onset of symptoms of jaundice in both acute and chronic HBV infection [5]. For HBV infection diagnosis, patients are screened both on serological and molecular level. Owing to its simplicity, sensitivity, and fast response, nucleic acid test (NAT) should be preferred for performing screening tests of the...

The well-being of the oral tissues, the quantity and quality of saliva and the dimension of taste depend on the intake of nutrients. Oral health determines the type of food consumed and ultimately the nutritional level. This review of literature aims to outline this interdependent relationship between the health of oral tissues and the nutrition.

The qualified doctors of this domain are called oral and maxillofacial pathologists.
