Over 90% of the infected individuals in Bangladesh took home treatments following various approaches and consuming different medications. The study aims to identify the recovery measures and the medications used by COVID-19 patients at home. Methods An online-based, cross-sectional survey was conducted between 5 October 2020 and 5 January 2021 among the COVID-19 patients who did not seek care from hospitals and recovered at home. Participants from all the administrative divisions of Bangladesh were recruited via social media. After obtaining consent, subjects were enrolled to complete the questionnaire that included questions on demographic characteristics, clinical itinerary, non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches. Results Of the 241 respondents, the majority were males (64.3%), aged 21-30 years (42.3%), and urban residents (65.6%). Fever (92.5%), cou...

Congenital hypothyroidism and environmental thyroiditis are two major concern now-a-days. Congenital hypothyroidism is broadly classified into Primary hypothyroidism, secondary hypothyroidism, peripheral hypothyroidism, syndromic hypothyroidism and transient congenital hypothyroidism. Factors affecting congenital hypothyroidism may include thyroid dyshormonogenesis, thyroid dysgenesis, resistance to TH binding, defects in T3 and T4 release or even genetic factor. Factors that increase environmental thyroid disease risk include radiation exposure, both from nuclear fallout and medical radiation, increased iodine intake, as well as several contaminants in the environment that influence the thyroid. In Bangladesh the overall state of thyroid disease is greatly influenced by gender and diseases like diabetes. Necessary steps should be taken to raise awareness among mass people about Hypothyroidism and enlighten them to make stand against this disease.

The ongoing respiratory disease pandemic COVID-19 caused by a newly emerging highly infectious vi... more The ongoing respiratory disease pandemic COVID-19 caused by a newly emerging highly infectious virus Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is aggravating the world’s health, economy and regular life. This unprecedented respiratory outbreak has already infected more than 43 million individuals and taken more than 1.1 million lives. The habitation of over 21% of the world’s population- the SAARC region is also susceptible to COVID-19 and comprises of more than 20% of the total infected cases. Demographic analysis showed that males and younger populations are mostly infected in South Asian countries. Similar genomic variations were observed in the countries such as variations in the ORF1ab, ORF1a, ORF3a and S genes were largely seen. As no effective treatment strategy hasn’t developed yet, only timely testing and tracing can mitigate the loss from the disease which led the way to the development of alternate screening methods with higher efficiency and timely res...

Methods: This cross sectional health survey was carried out with a self-designed standard questionnaire by manual data collection over a six months period (12.09.2015 to 10.04.2016) at three adjacent cities Jessore Sadar, Jhikargacha and Chowgacha upazila respectively. The data were collected from the patients prescription, diagnostic reports and by directly interviewing the patients who were treated as either type 1 or type 2 diabetic 235 fasting patients during the study period. Descriptive statistics were applied to the collected data and analyzed using Microsoft Excel software. Results: In our current survey, the average levels of HDL, LDL, TC, TG and Serum creatinine of investigated patients were observed with respect to their individual groups as...

Mushrooms have been consumed since earliest history; ancient Greeks believed that mushrooms provided strength for warriors in battle, and the Romans perceived them as the “Food of the Gods.” For centuries, the Chinese culture has treasured mushrooms as a health food, an “elixir of life”. For thousands of years it has been used as a potential source of medication and also a nutrient notable supplier of fibres, proteins, vitamins etc. Many mushroom species produce secondary metabolites that can be severely toxic and may cause psychosis. Although there are only a small number of deadly species, several others can cause particularly severe and unpleasant symptoms. This review includes a brief discussion on medicinal & toxic mushrooms and also highlights on some cultivated mushrooms in Bangladesh.

The present study set out to evaluate the antinociceptive, anti-pyretic and anti-inflammatory activity of the methanolic extract of Ficus hispida leaves (MFHL). Methods: Pithy dried leaves of Ficus hispida were extracted with sufficient amount of pure methanol. The antinociceptive activity of MFHL was evaluated by using formalin induced paw licking, acetic acid-induced writhing, tail immersion and hot plate methods in Swiss albino mice. Its anti-pyretic activity was evaluated by Brewer's yeast-induced pyrexia test. And anti-inflammatory activity was assessed by using xylene-induced ear edema test. Results: The crude extract was found to have significant (p<0.05, vs. control) analgesic activity at the oral dose of 200 & 400 mg/kg b. wt., in the tested animals. Extract at dose of 200 mg/kg and 400

The concentrations in samples analyzed were found to be in the range of 0.88-1.88 mg/kg for Mn, 11.95-25.25 mg/kg for Fe, 0.35-1.22 mg/kg for Cu, 6.92-17.96 mg/kg for Zn, 0.03-0.07 mg/kg for Ni, 0.955-1.45 mg/kg for Cr and 0.564-0.85 mg/kg for Pb. However, Arsenic was not detected in all the samples analyzed. As for the anti-nutritional factors, the concentrations in samples analyzed were found to be in the range of 111.35-123.42 mg/kg for saponins, 69.5-509.4 mg/kg for oxalates, and 0.38-0.156 mg/kg for phytate and 316.95-325.27 mg/kg for cyanogenic glycosides. The values of all these elements were found significantly below the recommended maximum tolerable guidelines level proposed by WHO/FAO except for lead (Pb), Pb was found slightly higher than the recommended limit as described. Our findings of this study reveal that most of the trace elements found in M. oleifera are below the recommended maximum tolerable limits; therefore it is safe for both human and animal consumption as well.

Insufficient health services, bad transportation and consequent delay in synthetic anti-snake venom management are the main motives for excessive mortality. Adverse drug reactions and inadequate storage conditions limit the use of synthetic anti-snake venom. The medicinal flora, available domestically and used widely by traditional healers, consequently need attention. Most of the snake bite cases are typically undermined due to loss of proper consciousness of the mass people. However, present evaluation has been focused at the artificial and traditional herbs and their anti-venom property, which can be a venturing stone in setting up the future treatment against snake bite treatment and management.

It has a great popularity for it is traditionally used as a medicine against microorganisms, inflammation, and cancer. We designed this experiment to explore the in vivo anticancer effects of C. album leaf extract against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cells in Swiss albino mice. Results Administration of C. album leaf extract at concentration 200 (mg/kg) and 400 (mg/kg) showed 30.60% and 41.80% cell growth inhibition respectively that were statistically significant (***P < 0.001) and may lead to apoptosis, and the number of apoptotic cells were 37.5 ± 6.22, 54.67 ± 4.76 respectively (***P < 0.001). Plant extract at concentration 200 (mg/kg) and 400 (mg/kg) increased life span 22.27% and 51.07% respectively. Tumor weight decreased 18.50 ± 2.59 g, 13.67 ± 2.25 g respectively compared to ...
