Gaia Memories (original) (raw)

Icon-wThis article is about a set of transformational implements in Kamen Rider W.

The Gaia Memories (ガイアメモリ, Gaia Memori), retroactively called the T1 Gaia Memories, are mysterious USB-like devices that represent all of Earth's knowledge. Through specific means, they enable users to become either a Dopant or a Kamen Rider while harnessing the powers and skills relating to the aspects of the Gaia Memory. They are distributed to the citizens of Futo via the black market by Museum, an underground organization headed by the Sonozaki Family that hopes to use the data collected from the Dopants they create to orchestrate a second Gaia Impact. Every Gaia Memory is adorned with the first letter of its name, stylized to reflect the powers it imbues on its user.

Overview[]

Gaia Memories are aspects of the True Gaia Memory, the knowledge of everything on the Earth. These were originally accessed due to Philip's link to the Gaia Memory by means of the Gaia Library (地球(ほし)の本棚, Hoshi no Hondana). But after he was taken from them, the Sonozaki Family uses a strange temple underneath their mansion to access the Gaia Memory. They then sell these to the highest bidder or to common criminals, both of whom are used as guinea pigs to study the Gaia Memories as part of the Gaia Impact project.

Dopant Memory Usage[]

Using Gaia Memories directly with the human body will result in the host transforming into a Dopant. This is done by inserting the Memory into a USB-port like tattoo called the Living Connector (生体コネクタ, Seitai Konekuta) anywhere on the body, which said tattoo is produced using the L.C.O.G. When the Memory comes into contact with the tattoo, the Memory is entirely absorbed by the user's body, transforming them into a Dopant. Memories can also be used without a Living Connector but at the cost of additional side effects such as severe physical pain and bruising after several uses. Like narcotics, Dopant transformation is highly addictive and will eventually drive the users insane. To avoid this, the Sonozaki Family use special belts called Memory Drivers (メモリドライバー, Memori Doraibā) to filter out the negative side-effects in exchange for overall strength.

The full potential of a Gaia Memory depends on the compatibility between the Memory and its users, as if there were some "destined connection" as exampled by Katsumi Daido and the NEVERs. High and low respectively, the compatibility rate can either result in a Dopant or Kamen Rider gaining a stronger form or weakening the user from the adverse side effects towards death (evident in the "closed k" case). As revealed in Fuuto PI, those with an unusually high compatibility rate will gain a portion of their memory's powers from continued usage, being able to use it in human form, while also awakening non-definition abilities in Dopant form. These awakened users are called High Dopes (ハイドープ, Hai Dōpu) with Wakana Sonozaki and Mutsuo Mihara as the prime examples.

By appearance, the Memories come in different colors which also associates their ranking. The golden ones are ranked the highest and thus used by group executives (such as Museum and Street), silver being ranked for officials (proven in the "closed k" case when Phillip mentions the Weather Dopant), and bronze being ranked for experimentation on people, or used for enforcers/grunts(Masquerade Dopants) to guard/serve higher authorities.

Rider Memory Usage[]

Kamen Riders such as Double and Accel utilize extremely refined Gaia Memories that have been completely purified of all negative side effects, which can only be used in specialized Memory Drivers like the Doubledriver/Lostdriver and the Acceldriver. Unlike the belts used by the Sonozaki Family, these Belts channel the Memories' powers and apply them on the human body externally rather than internally.

As such, full usage of the Memories' strength can only be accessed through a Maximum Drive, allowing it enough power to perform a Memory Break (メモリブレイク, Memori Bureiku) on a Dopant Memory. Stronger Memories require a direct strike on its location within the Dopant's body to execute a Memory Break. If the Dopant did not use the Memory via a Living Connector, a Memory Break will not occur, but the Gaia Memory will still be ejected from the user's body.

List of Gaia Memories[]

The Soul Memories (ソウルメモリ, Sōru Memori) are Gaia Memories that would be used in the right-hand side of the Doubledriver. They have silver tips.

T2 Gaia Memories

T2 Gaia Memories (from A to Z)

T2 Gaia Memories (T2ガイアメモリ, Tī Tsū Gaia Memori, short for "Type Two") are next generation Gaia Memories created by Foundation X using Shroud's research before she left the Museum and later stolen by NEVER. They were briefly featured in Episode 44 and used exclusively in Kamen Rider Double Forever: A to Z/The Gaia Memories of Fate.

There were 26 T2 Gaia Memories, one for each letter in the alphabet. Unlike other refined Gaia Memories, they have blue plugs instead of silver or gold ones. They are capable of transforming someone into a Dopant without a living connector and not cause the side effects associated with previous Memories. T2 Gaia Memories can also be used with a Lostdriver to transform someone into a Kamen Rider. T2 Gaia Memories also seem to have some level of sentience, as they were seen seeking out compatible users. T2 Memories are also implied to be stronger than their T1 counterparts. Unlike the previous Gaia Memories, T2 Gaia Memories could not be destroyed with a normal Maximum Drive, which only results in the Memory being ejected from the user.

All 26 T2 Gaia Memories were ultimately destroyed along with Kamen Rider Eternal by Kamen Rider Double CycloneJokerGoldXtreme's Golden Xtreme.

In the Professor Jinno and Assistant Makura's Gaia Memory Research net movie segments for the summer movie, Kamen Rider W Forever: From A to Z, 26 Rapid-Succession Roars of Laughter, two Museum scientists are conducting "evil" experiments with various unused or unseen Memories with comical results. The "Dopants" produced with these Memories are simply outrageous outfits instead of monster costumes.

Gaia Memory Briefcase Ep3

Kirihiko's Gaia Memory briefcase from episode 3

Several times throughout the television series, briefcases filled with various Gaia Memories are briefly shown, with most of them never being used in-show, but in other media. Others are seen in the possession of customers, but are destroyed before the person can transform. Foundation X facilities also sometimes have various Memories on display. All of them were later represented in the Complete Selection Modification line. Identifiable Memories include:

Wizard[]

The Gaia Memories, along with the other Rider Powers, were stolen from Double by Amadum in the world within the Magic Stone, who explained that they were already his due to the Riders' powers being from the same source as evil. However, the power was soon returned thanks to the appearance of Kamen Rider Gaim, with the return of the Memories immediately transforming Double into CycloneJokerXtreme.[Neverending Story]

Portrayal[]

The voice of the Gaia Memories is provided by Fumihiko Tachiki (立木 文彦, Tachiki Fumihiko), who is also the narrator of W.
