The prime threat to surface water quality of the Buriganga is dumping of untreated wastes. Due to a lack of awareness and inadequate facilities people dispose untreated wastes on the bank of the river and directly into the river. This irrational discharge of wastes has many serious effects on water quality. Many water quality parameters (temperature, pH, DO, BOD5, COD, PO4-P, NH3-N, Pb and Cr) can be found in violation of national standards. This study tries to summarize the current status of the Buriganga River based on published sources and discusses some of the problems resulting from activities such as illegal waste dumping and proposes mitigation measures. Possible mitigation measures for restoration and protection of the Buriganga River are discussed in this paper.
