It argues that the weakening of the Duma, Russia's Parliament, since Vladimir Putin's rise to power in 2000, has emboldened executive overreach on human rights issues. The chapter examines two fundamental case studies: 1) The Chechen Wars and Beyond: This section analyzes how the Duma's failure to act as a check on the executive during the Second Chechen War (1999-2009) set a precedent for future human rights abuses in the region. 2) The Annexation of Crimea and the Plight of the Crimean Tatars: This section investigates how the 2014 annexation of Crimea and subsequent persecution of the Crimean Tatars exemplifies Russia's disregard for international human rights norms and the Duma's complicity in such violations. By analyzing these cases, the chapter demonstrates how a weakened legislature has facilitated the Kremlin's exploitation of "frozen conflicts" in former Soviet territories to undermine human rights and pursue geopolitical agendas. The chapter briefly mentions the concept of "frozen conflicts" and their significance for Russia's foreign policy. It also highlights the broader implications of Russia's human rights record for the international order.

FROM 1994 CRIMEAN CRISIS TO 2014-2022? THE RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR: ANALYSIS OF WAR İN THE RECTANGULAR OF GEOPOLITICS, CONSTRUCTIVISM, DOMESTIC POLICY, AND PUTIN.
Abstract
Since the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014 and the full-fledged war against Ukraine in 2022, many different theoretical approaches have been used to explain and understand it. Mearsheimer’s offensive realism may help us to shed light on the changing nature of the European security structure and the altering geopolitics of Eastern Europe over the past three decades. But there is a need to apply multi-level, multi-factor and multi-variate accounts of why Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to invade Ukraine. This study aims to answer the question of why Putin has opened the Pandora Box in the middle of Europe. First, it has analyzed by using the geopolitical approach and aggressive realism. The second explanation is ideational, psychological, emotional, and ontological factors as well as the Putin post-truth fascism and Russian nationalism, the Third Rome theory, symbolic nature of Russia’s psyho-analytical and ontological security concerns, and the clash of Russian and Western civilization concepts. Constructivism that is linked to civilizations, cognitions and emotions in IR is necessary to understand Russia’s Ukraine policymaking. Another explanation is the neoclassical realism that emphasize complex and multifaceted causes of the Ukraine Russia War.

The improvement of global security and world peace is the raison d'etre of the United Nations... more The improvement of global security and world peace is the raison d'etre of the United Nations. The concept of multilateral peacekeeping has been practiced by the UN over the last eighty-five years. The peacekeeping operations have three main objectives: collective security, preventive diplomacy and peaceful settlement of international conflicts. The idea of creating an international nonviolence "peace army" can be traced to the Shanti Sena (Gandhian peace brigade). The members of the Shanti Sena used nonviolent unarmed tools not kill but die for their peacekeeping duties. The present study aims to shed light on the evolution of nonviolent peacekeeping ideas and present some examples in the post-Cold War conflicts. In the post-Covid-19 world, it is possible to refrain from the threat or actual use of force and replace it with unarmed civilian peacekeeping. Nonviolent peacekeeping may employ some Western (relationships, influence, advocacy, solidarity) and Islamic (sabr ...

This paper aims to analyze the post-2014 Crimean hybrid conflict situation of the Crimean Tatars, by investigating how the Crimean Tatars conditions have evolved under the Russian invasion forces for the last five years. In order to understand the post-2014 situation, the paper also focuses and examines the forced deportation (Sürgün or the Soviet Genocide), as well as Turkey's foreign policy reactions toward this regional conflict. Civil disobedience and nonviolent strategy of the Crimean Tatars have been used to pressure the Russian public opinion and political elites regarding the unlawful and unfair act toward the Ukrainian and Crimean sovereignty. In addition, the Crimean Tatars have voiced their concerns and demands in the international political arenas. Overall, the paper focuses on the repercus...

Without a single shot, Putin's Russia illegally has occupied and annexed Crimea. This paper analyzes the historical background of the crisis with the emphasis on the Crimean Tatars. First, the history of Crimea briefly is presented. Second, the Crimean Tatars national struggle is explained by using peace studies and nonviolence concepts and theories. Third, the 2014 Crimean Crisis were explained by using not only geo-strategic and geo-economic concepts but also psycho-historical concepts, specifically chosen traumas of the Crimean Tatars and Russians. The article suggests that Russia invaded Crimea not only the strategic national interests of the Black Sea Fleet but most importantly the losing of Crimea in 1954 and 1990s as chosen traumatic events. Similarly, the Crimean Tatars were produced their national identities on their-Sürgün‖, the forceful deportation of the Crimean Tatars by Stalin to Siberia and ...

The volume provides a comprehensive overview of the core concepts, theories, approaches, processes, and intervention designs about Human Needs theory in the conflict resolution field. The main theme is the analysis of HNs theory with multidisciplinary approaches. The book moves from the study of theoretical and analytical approaches for explaining the deep-rooted causes of conflict with HNs theory to HNs-based third-party intervention approaches to resolving and transforming conflict.

They have condemned the Russian aggression toward the Ukrainian territorial integrity in national and international levels. This paper aims to analyze the current situation of the Crimean Tatars after the 2014 Crimean Crisis. It investigates how the Crimean Tatars conditions in their homeland have evolved under the Russian occupation forces for the last six years. In order to understand the current situation, it is necessary to examine the chosen trauma, the forced deportation (Sürgün) or Soviet Genocide that was ordered by Stalin in 18 th May 1944. It has played a significant role to shape the Crimean Tatar national identity. Furthermore, the paper focuses on the repercussions of the Crimean crisis from political, social and international perspectives. In the last part, Turkey's reactions toward this regional conflict in the Black Sea region are evaluated.

This article analyzes the Basque conflict within the framework of the conflict analysis and resolution perspective. First, it highlights the conflict issues among the Basque conflict parties. Second, it clarifies the conflict issues by focusing on kidnapping and assassination done by the ETA during 1990s. The special case of Miguel Angel Blanco who was a local Basque councilman is a case study. In order to shed light on the Blanco case, it is necessary to focus the conflict resolution dynamics of the Basque conflict. Third, the paper aims to examine the Blanco case in terms of conflict issue identification, conflict issue clarification, and conflict cultural analysis perspectives. The issue identification perspective focuses on identity, face, and instrumental issues of the Basque conflict. The iss...

Sandole's three pillar model presents a systematic road-map to identify the main issues, causes, and conditions of conflicts, as well as third-party conflict intervention approach. Three pillar model is also well suited to the analysis of complex conflict in Burundi and its intervention process by the third parties during the 1990s. This paper touches on the issues, causes, and conditions of Burundian conflict as Sandole's first and second pillars suggest, but primarily focuses on the intervention aspect in line with the third pillar of the model. In this context, the conflict intervention framework in Burundi is examined based on the regionally launched Arusha peace process, which resulted in a peace agreement. Following that, given the multi-level nature of the conflict in Burundi, it is discussed how an effective conflict intervention can be designed in order to resolve conflicts and ensure positive peace in the country.
