Prof. Dr. Mansour A. M. Al-Garni: received a BS(1993) in geophyiscs from King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia, an MS (1996) in geophysics from Colorado School of Mines, and a PhD (2001) in geophysics from Texas A&M University. In 1993, he worked as ageophysicist at the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, United States Geological Survey, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and as ademonstrator of geophysics at King Abdulaziz University, where in 2002 he became anassistant professor of geophysics. He has been promoted to an associate professor of geophysics in 2006 and promoted to a full professor of geophysics in 2010. Furthermore, he has been assigned as thechairman of geophysics department in 2003-2011, vice dean in 2014, and vice dean for graduate studies and scientific research in 2015. His research interests are controlled-source electromagnetic induction in anisotropic media, electrical methods, gravity and magnetic, near surface applied geophysics, forward and inverse modeling, environmental & engineering geophysics: theory, data processing and interpretation. Prof. Al-Garni has reviewed many academic works and has been on many committees including those of M.Sc and Ph.D examinations. His remarkable efforts in the establishment and development of various projects were reflected in valuable academic and professional successes and achievements. Prof. Al-Garni has been selected in the "Who's Who in the World" as one of the world's foremost acheivers in the field of geophysics in the 28th Edition (2011).

Wadi No'man is bounded by Gabal Kabkab from the north and Gabal No'man from the south; it discharges its water to the Red Sea. The area under investigation forms a part of the Arabian shield of the western Saudi Arabia. Accordingly, igneous and metamorphic rocks cover the study area. In the upstream of Wadi No'man, the escarpment is a conspicuous structural feature, besides; major and minor faults are dominant in Wadi No'man and adjacent areas.

A new approach is proposed in order to interpret spontaneous potential (self-potential) anomalies... more A new approach is proposed in order to interpret spontaneous potential (self-potential) anomalies related to simple geometric-shaped models such as sphere, horizontal cylinder, and vertical cylinder. This approach is mainly based on using neural network inversion of SP anomalies, particularly modular algorithm, for estimating the parameters of different simple geometrical bodies. However, Hilbert transforms are involved to determine the origin location in order to reduce the parameters which minimize the ambiguity in the inverted models. The inversion has been tested first on synthetic data from different models, using only one well-trained network. The results of inversion show that the parameter values derived by the inversion are identical to the true values of parameters. Noise analysis has been also examined, where the results of the inversion produce acceptable results up to 10% of white Gaussian noise.

Journal of Geophysics and Engineering, 2012

The modular neural network (MNN) inversion method has been used for inversion of self-potential (... more The modular neural network (MNN) inversion method has been used for inversion of self-potential (SP) data anomalies caused by 2D inclined sheets of infinite horizontal extent. The analysed parameters are the depth (h), the half-width (a), the inclination (α), the zero distance from the origin (x o ) and the polarization amplitude (k). The MNN inversion has been first tested on a synthetic example and then applied to two field examples from the Surda area of Rakha mines, India, and Kalava fault zone, India. The effect of random noise has been studied, and the technique showed satisfactory results. The inversion results show good agreement with the measured field data compared with other inversion techniques in use.
