Does engaging agility (namely, opportunity agility and planning agility) in response to adversity help entrepreneurs safeguard their wellbeing? Activated by adversity, agility may function as a specific resilience mechanism enabling positive adaption to crisis. We studied 3162 entrepreneurs from 20 countries during the COVID-19 pandemic and found that more severe national lockdowns enhanced firm-level adversity for entrepreneurs and diminished their wellbeing. Moreover, entrepreneurs who combined opportunity agility with planning agility experienced higher wellbeing but planning agility alone lowered wellbeing. Entrepreneur agility offers a new agentic perspective to research on entrepreneur wellbeing.

Research Design & Methods: The article is conceptual in nature. We propose a framework of character strengths and stages of development of the entrepreneurial venture, which is based on an exhaustive literature review. Findings: The article proposes that different character strengths contribute to one's success at various stages of venture development: curiosity, creativity, open-mindedness, and hope at the stage of opportunity recognition; bravery, integrity, love of learning, social intelligence, and kindness at the stage of refinement of business concept and resource acquisition; persistence, self-regulation, zest, humour, leadership, teamwork, and fairness at the stage of survival and growth. Moreover, We propose that perspective allows entrepreneurs to accumulate experience and recognize and exploit further opportunities. Implications & Recommendations: The study has implications mainly for entrepreneurs (recommendation for higher self-awareness) and investors (investment in entrepreneur's strength bundled with investment in the business). Contribution & Value Added: This study adds to the understanding of mechanisms through which personal differences influence entrepreneurial actions and their outcomes. It adds to our understanding of specific entrepreneurship phenomena like entrepreneurial alertness or business planning. Thirdly, it contributes to the understanding not only of market entry but also of pre-entry and post-entry phenomena.

The nationwide lock-down for over two months and subsequent easing of restrictions over multiple months in 2020 has put significant stress on the Indian Micro-Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which contribute nearly one-third of India's GDP. This report discusses insights from a survey of Indian small business entrepreneurs that captured their situation during the COVID-19 pandemic. We assess both the short- and long-term consequences and opportunities for Indian entrepreneurs, posed by the pandemic. We also notice that entrepreneurs have contributed beyond the economic considerations of the business, through volunteering their time and services for societal causes during the pandemic. We also compare the response of Indian entrepreneurs with their Asian peers from Bangladesh, China and Pakistan. The study reflects on four long terms trends for post-COVID economy ...

Research paper thumbnail of New Impulse for European Economy? Comparison of entrepreneurship in Turkey and Poland

IntroductionThe European economy has experienced a serious slowdown during last couple of years [... more IntroductionThe European economy has experienced a serious slowdown during last couple of years [Connolly 2012]. Whilst not neglecting the academic efforts to investigate the antecedents of the economic crisis and it is crucial to find a path forward. It is also important to notice that some countries proved to be at least partially immune against the continental and global slowdown and their economies did not suffer any drop in GDP [Connolly 2012]. Among those very few countries were two of which one is a member of European Union and the other is strongly aspiring to become one - Poland and Turkey. What is therefore the secret of the ability to perform more effectively than others in current, more difficult times? One obvious explanation would be the size of the internal market - both countries have populations of considerable size (Poland - 38.5 million, Turkey - 75.6 million). However, a closer inspection demonstrates that both countries also have strong entrepreneurial capacity....

The purpose of the study is to identify which factors contribute most to the intent to embark on entrepreneurial ventures in the future. The theoretical part provide the background for entrepreneurial intent models along with its probable determinants identified in the previous study. Their list encompasses more than 20 factors, and their impact is verified in the present study. The results indicate that five factors play a major role in evoking entrepreneurial intent: noticing opportunities, positive self-assessment of own skills, the need of autonomy, risk-taking and planning skills; the last two play a relatively less significant role, and the last one has a negative impact. The theoretical and educational implications as well as the limitations of the study are discussed in the conclusions.

Considering that improvising involves the ability to pivot we argue that enhancing entrepreneurial orientation of existing firms means that their entrepreneurial behaviors can be also displayed in more responsible manner. The paper aims at investigating the influence of improvisation on entrepreneurial orientation (EO). While intuitively improvisation is closely connected to EO, surprisingly, there is very little theoretical and empirical evidence on that relation. The paper closes that gap by empirically investigating the role that improvisation plays in enhancing EO. Building on empirical evidence on the role of improvising in individual entrepreneurship, we use Hmieleski and Corbett’s framework of improvisation as a three-dimensional construct (creativity and bricolage, ability to function and excel under pressure and in s...

Research paper thumbnail of The mystery of high performance – mediation by entrepreneurial orientation and organizational citizenship behavior

Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation, 2020

The search for high performance is one of the leading themes in management science with a number ... more The search for high performance is one of the leading themes in management science with a number of frameworks developed over the decades. The purpose of the paper is to investigate if the effect of high performance organization (HPO) characteristics has a direct effect on actual organizational performance or if the effect is mediated by organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and entrepreneurial orientation (EO). Previous research states that the framework of HPO characteristics answers the question of 'what' high performers do, but does not answer the question of 'how' they do it, suggesting a mediating effect. The study attempts to establish which of the pair of OCB and EO (if any) has a stronger mediating effect. The hypotheses were tested using a cross-sectional research design with a random and representative sample of 406 enterprises. The research was carried out using the technique of personal interview (CAPI). Established scales were used to measure high performance indicators, organizational citizenship behavior, entrepreneurial orientation, and organizational performance. The conceptual framework with mediated effects was tested using a structural equations modeling approach. Research results indicate that there is a strong direct positive relationship between high performance indicators and organizational effectiveness. Moreover, there is a strong positive effect of high performance indicators on entrepreneurial orientation and organizational citizenship behavior. However, the effect of those two constructs on organizational effectiveness is rather weak, and, in the case of OCB, negative. That leads to the conclusion that the direct effect of high performance indicators is stronger, although the positive mediation by entrepreneurial orientation is statistically significant. The study contributes to the scientific debate in at least three ways. First, it confirms that high performance characteristics have a strong effect on actual performance. Second, it points to entrepreneurial orientation

The main analytical technique is hierarchical regression analysis. Findings: No impact of prosocial motivation on innovativeness was observed. Among dimensions of OCB only three of them proved to have any impact on organizational entrepreneurship. Altruism is positively related to innovativeness and proactiveness. Sportsmanship is positively related to all three dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation. The only negative infl uence of OCB dimensions on organizational entrepreneurship was observed for conscientiousness and innovativeness. Environment seems to have a strong impact on the relationship between OCB and entrepreneurial orientation. Expectedly, the impact of dynamism and complexity is positive, so in fast changing and complicated circumstances that infl uence is stronger. Unexpectedly, for environmental hostility the eff ect is negative. Implications/limitations either for further research, for practice, or for society: The study brings some practical recommendations concerning the ways of making the company more entrepreneurial concerning altruism, sportsmanship and conscientiousness. The results also add to ongoing discussion on dimensionality of entrepreneurial orientation. As the impact of prosocial motivation and OCB is rather similar for all three dimensions of EO, results point to rather unidimensional view of entrepreneurial orientation instead of multidimensional one. Originality/value of the paper: The study brings some contribution to the discussion on social antecedents of entrepreneurial orientation. It sheds light on possible outcomes of organizational citizenship behaviors for organizational entrepreneurship. Until now, the research in that regard was rather scarce.

The paper attempts to fill that gap by proposing a coherent concept of positive orientation along with its measure. Methodology/approach: To achieve the purpose the philosophy of creating and using orientations at organizational level has been reviewed, the underlying structure of organizational alignment has been selected and positive phenomena have been conceptually attributed to five dimensions of positive orientation: leadership, culture, strategy, design and human capital. The conceptually created framework has been empirically tested using factor analysis and reliability analysis. Findings: The research results confirm that positive orientation is a multi-dimensional construct with five dimensions: positive leadership, positive culture, positive strategy, positive design and positive human capital. Implications/limitations: The paper has main implications for further research. The concept of positive orientation can be used as a useful tool not only for measuring organizational positivity, but also for researching its antecedents and consequences. Originality/value: The concept of positive orientation is one of the very few integrated concepts of positivity at organizational level. It is fully original and has been conceptualized and operationalized using commonly accepted methods of construct development.
