- 💧 Enhancing Water Security for Pastoralist Communities In the drylands, access to water is critical for both pastoralists and their livestock. Through the GIZ Kenya SCIDAIII programme, we’re using geospatial technology and data to map water resources and ensure that pastoralists can access vital water points, even during dry seasons. These interventions are improving water security, reducing resource-based conflicts, and supporting resilient livelihoods. Let’s discuss how these interventions are shaping the future of climate adaptation at #COP29.#WaterSecurity #EOData #ClimateChangeAdaptation #PastoralistResilience #SustainableDevelopment

🚢 We’re thrilled to announce the official launch of a new cooperation between the International Power-to-X Hub and the Global Maritime Forum (GMF) to support Kenya on its path towards green shipping corridor value chains 🌍. Through the grant agreement, GMF will support Kenya, particularly the Kenyan Maritime Authority in activating the national industrial landscape to decarbonise its shipping sector🌊. As home to one of Africa’s most important ports🚢🛳️⚓, Kenya holds immense potential to produce #greenhydrogen and alternative #shippingfuels, leveraging its abundant renewable energy resources. Mombasa is well positioned to become a first mover green shipping corridor, tapping into this opportunity to drive business growth, boost national revenue, and create green jobs. Embracing this role would also elevate Kenya’s influence on the international stage, championing the global transition towards shipping #defossilisation. We extend our gratitude to the @GreenVoyage2050 programme for hosting our joint kick-off today at @IMO HQ. Our grant agreement will also complement on-going efforts by the Government of Kenya and IMO’s GreenVoyage2050 in the development of a National Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships. Next joint docking – 5 to 7of February 2025 in Mombasa for the regional IMO conference on “Overcoming Challenges and Seizing Opportunities of Green Shipping in Africa”. - Improving Community Health Through Collaborative Governance in Baringo County Mr. Yannic Kiewitt, representative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Mr. Daniel Guenther & Ms. Alena Kern, from the German development cooperation and Mr. Thomas Ansorg, Head of the Governance, Peace, and Security Cluster at GIZ Kenya, recently visited Kipcherere Dispensary in Baringo County. This visit, conducted in partnership with the Centre for Enhancing Democracy and Good Governance #CEDGG (GIZ Kenya’s partner in Baringo County), was aimed at deepening collaboration and supporting initiatives for community-driven development. Located in Baringo North, the dispensary faced significant challenges. It was non-operational, with limited resources and facilities. Concerned citizens, backed by #CEDGG and #GIZKenya support, conducted a #SocialAudit to foster #CommunityDialogue and engage the county government. Using the social audit findings, they advocated for improvements in staffing, medical supplies, and infrastructure. Today, the dispensary stands as a beacon of hope. With a functional lab, and a Maternal and Child Health unit, the facility serves the community with a dedicated team of five health professionals. Kipcherere Dispensary currently serves as the main referral facility in the ward. This initiative showcases the power of community-driven change and the impact of collaborative governance.Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH

This week, the Forced Displacement and Migration Cluster at GIZ Kenya held its annual assembly, bringing together 35 colleagues from 7 projects in Kenya and Djibouti! It was wonderful to reflect on our journey and share ideas for 2025 and beyond! We also discussed project updates and celebrated the growth of our cluster! We were thrilled to introduce 2 new projects for 2025 as we continue working towards sustainable solutions for migrants, refugees, and hosting communities. A big thank you to our Country Director, Mr. Bodo Immink for sharing with us the organisation’s vision and strategy as well as panellists from IOM - UN Migration and the Kenya Ministry of Interior (Refugee Affairs) for sharing their insights on the evolving landscape of refugee and migration policies. SCIDA III: Driving Climate Resilience in the Horn of Africa at COP 29 As COP 29 begins, GIZ Kenya is proud to showcase the SCIDA III project, which strengthens the Horn of Africa’s capacity to adapt to the impacts of climate change. Through initiatives spanning Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Somalia, SCIDA III is delivering cross-border climate solutions to build sustainable, resilient communities. Working with IGAD and regional governments, SCIDA III supports drought management, sustainable rangeland development, and cross-border conflict resolution. These measures are critical for pastoralist communities whose livelihoods are increasingly threatened by climate change. In the Karamoja Cluster, we are advancing transhumance development plans to sustainably manage 50,000 hectares of pastureland between Kenya and Uganda. Our work in the Mandera Triangle enhances cross-border cooperation for peacebuilding and resource sharing among communities. As world leaders discuss climate solutions at COP 29, we remain committed to creating tangible change on the ground, fostering collaboration and resilience for the communities most impacted by climate risks. Strengthening IGAD’s Capacity to Increase Drought Resilience in the Horn of Africa (SCIDA III) is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). #COP29 #ClimateResilience #SCIDAIII #SustainableDevelopment #HornOfAfrica #CrossBorderCooperation - Knowledge is power. 💪 Prior to delving into an intensive entrepreneurship and financial literacy course, the GIZ Kenya ProSEET project in #Turkana West organized a 5-day Life skills and Psychosocial Training for its 18 business development trainers! They dove into a variety of topics, including Personal Management, Relationship Building, and Decision Making! Our trainers also explored the application of life skills in citizenship and social concerns, as well as in business contexts. We are excited to see the positive impact this will have on the local community there! The Promoting Employability & Entrepreneurship in Turkana West (ProSEET) project focuses on strengthening the socio-economic self-reliance of youth in the refugee and host communities of Turkana West subcounty. It is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and funded by Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
