About us
UN-Habitat is the United Nations entity responsible for developing urban policies and translating them into action to create sustainable cities and communities. Cities are facing unprecedented demographic, environmental, economic, and social challenges. There has been a phenomenal shift towards urbanization, with half of the world's population living in cities. By 2050, almost 70 per cent of the population will reside in cities. This urban growth will be happening mainly in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. In the absence of effective urban planning, the consequences of this rapid urbanization will be dramatic. Urban policies need to change to turn this rapid urban growth into opportunities to create a better quality of life for people. UN-Habitat is at the helm of this change. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to address the issues of urban growth and sustainable urban development.

- At the U20, local leaders emphasized the need for $800 USD billion in annual public investment by 2030 to secure a sustainable and resilient urban future. This message is more than a number—it’s a lifeline for cities, where 70% are already feeling the impacts of climate change - deadly floods to droughts, heatwaves and loss of homes. At COP29, UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Rossbach will acknowledge the need for climate finance during the Ministerial Meetings on Urbanization and Climate Change, which include four focused High Level Roundtables driving actionable solutions: 📅 Wednesday, 20 November at #COP29🔹 09:00 - 10:30 | Plenary Hall 2, Caspian High-Level Opening on Multilevel Climate Action 🔹 11:00 - 12:30 | Area C, Hirkan Roundtable 1: Green Construction & Energy Efficiency in Buildings 🔹 11:00 - 12:30 | Area C, Mugham Roundtable 2: Greening Urban Transport 🔹 13:00 - 14:30 | Area C, Hirkan Roundtable 3: Nature, Health & Resilience in Cities 🔹 13:00 - 14:30 | Area C, Mugham Roundtable 4: Financing Urban Climate Action Join us as we connect global ambition with local action to create a better urban future. - For the first time, the UN system is collaborating at an unprecedented level, as noted by Catherine Diam-Valla at #COP29: The UN has never come together like this before to support member states. UN-Habitat convened a discussion with several UN agencies and partners on how the UN is collectively helping countries to chart a just and equitable transition to a net zero future. A key message emerged: Helping them to help us. Helping them to help us means breaking it down to the local level, where solutions become more tangible and actionable. Cities are on the frontlines of climate hazards and action, but they need data, tools, financing, and support to succeed. ✨The message from the discussion was clear: take advantage of the opportunity to get support from the UN in shaping better national climate action plans (NDCs). A big thank you to the UN agencies and close partners supporting member states who also contributed to the official #COP29 side event Local Action, Global Goals: UN Environment Programme ,UNDP, United Nations University - Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) @Nations Economicand Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, and the World Meteorological Organization.
- By 2050, urban areas could triple in size. Are we ready for the consequences? Launched last week by C40 Cities at the World Urban Forum, the Climate Action Guide for Urban Planners aims to be an essential tool to help urban planners define cities’ capacities to meet climate goals and enhance quality of life for all residents, now and long into the future. By the middle of the century, urban areas could triple in size, with significant consequences for natural ecosystems, greenhouse gas emissions, and vulnerability to climate-related risks such as flooding, heat waves, and water scarcity. Urban planners are the best placed to design more resilient cities and have a huge impact on millions of lives. Therefore, being well prepared for the climate crisis is the best time investment right now. Agree? Read it here - in English, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese or French: https://lnkd.in/eTRHyrHf

This briefing will spotlight the impactful commitments made by ministers, local leaders, and key stakeholders to tackle climate change through innovative, collaborative urban strategies. 📅 Date: Wednesday, 20 November 2024 ⏰ Time: 15:00 - 15:30 📍 Location: Press Room 1, Karabakh Area C Speakers include: -Anacláudia Rossbach, Executive Director of UN-Habitat -Anar Guliyev, Chairman of State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture of the Republic of Azerbaijan-Nigar Arpadarai, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion -Minna Arve, Mayor of Turku and ICLEI First Vice President Media and stakeholders are invited to engage directly on key topics.#ClimateAction #Urbanization #SustainableCities - China’s urban population increased from 240 to 930 million between 1985 and 2023! The urban population increased from 24% in 1985 to 66% today! Whilst this has been sustained by a huge growth in infrastructure and public services as well as better economic opportunities and innovation hubs all over the countries... ... This has also caused huge environmental damage. Many Chinese cities are trying to reverse the damage by incorporating more green spaces, including adopting the Sponge City approach. This also makes themselves more resilient to disasters and helps welcome nature back. How else can we make urbanisation more environmentally friendly? Source: Arnold Ma
