This study recruited 1,000 participants, representative of the UK population, to complete an online survey prompting beliefs about rape perpetrators, rape victims, rape allegations, male rape, and motives for and consequences of rape. After carrying out frequency analyses on agree-incorrect and disagree-incorrect statements, we found that, generally, accuracy was high, although there were higher levels of stereotype acceptance for perpetrator related stereotypes. Further analysis found that in terms of demographic differences, Black and Asian participants and men were significantly more likely to accept stereotypes than other demographic groups. Implications for policy and practice are discussed, including potential for jury education, and educational m...

Hierarchical regression and path analyses were used to examine the relationships between parenting styles, children's trait EI, and their psychological symptoms, with children's psychological symptoms as the dependent variable. The results showed that authoritative parenting was positively associated with children‟s trait EI, which in turn had a negative effect on children‟s psychological symptoms, whereas authoritarian and Chinese-specific parenting styles had direct negative effect on children‟s psychological symptoms. These findings shed light on the pathways of the interrelations between different parenting styles, children's trait EI, and psych...

Six hundred and sixty-six parent-child dyads in Taiwan participated in this study. The parents and the children filled out the parenting questionnaires, and the children also reported their general mental health. The results demonstrated that parental-reported and child-perceived parenting were positively correlated, but parents tended to report lower scores on authoritarian parenting and higher scores on Chinese parenting than did their children. There were also significant gender differences: The mothers reported higher authoritative parenting than did the fathers; and the boys perceived higher authoritarian and Chinese-culture specific parenting than did the girls. Moreover, the Chinese parenting had a negative effect on children’s mental health outcomes. Finally, our results showed that children’s perception of parenting had a s...

In this chapter, we review the major themes and methods used in existing studies involving immigrant Chinese fathers and explore reasons behind immigrant Chinese fathers’ low visibility in the fatherhood scholarship. While the demographic under-representation of immigrant Chinese families may be a possible reason, stereotypical assumptions about immigrant or ethnic minority fathers and particularly Chinese men may have contributed to the neglect of immigrant Chinese fathers. Specifically, these stereotypical assumptions include that immigrant Chinese fathers are well-integrated immigrants who successfully fulfill essential paternal responsibilities of co-residence and provision, as typically defined by the white mainstream fatherhood ideal. A focus on immigrant Chinese fathers would considerably enrich the fatherhood scholarship, especially when the fathers’ parenting experiences, beliefs, practices, and influences are examined through a critical ecological approach.

It first overviews some recent developments and legislation in China regarding police interviewing of suspects, followed by outlining the linguistic and psychological research upon which the analyses are based. The interviews are examined using critical discourse analysis that reveals the high-power position of the Chinese police in suspect interviews. However, the large proportion of open questions found in the interviews is encouraging, as this suggests that regulations outlawing use of evidence obtained by torture or other illegal means are taking effect. This article is the first to empirically examine actual Chinese police interviews with suspects, providing valuable insights for theories and practice.

Witness identification practice of the police plays a critical role in the criminal proceedings. ... more Witness identification practice of the police plays a critical role in the criminal proceedings. The current study examines police officers' knowledge regarding factors affecting witness memory as well as witness interview and identification practices in Taiwan, after relevant judicial reform had been implemented for more than a decade. A total of 499 police officers in Taiwan participated in the survey to report their knowledge and actual practice of eyewitness interview and identification. The findings revealed strengths as well as weaknesses in their current practice. More disconcertingly, most (87.8%) of them did not received relevant training, and those who received training scored lower in both eyewitness knowledge and witness identification practice than those who received no training. These findings suggested that operations of eyewitness identification were not completely in line with recommended best practice outlined in recent Judicial Reform, and that the current training need to be improved to increase its effectiveness.

However, very limited research attention has been paid to how intergenerational attachment, relating to an individual’s perception of his/her own and that of his/her parents’ attachment, can affect marital dynamics within different cultural contexts. The current study examined associations between married heterosexual couples’ romantic attachment, perception of parental attachment, and marital satisfaction in 100 Thai couples (M age = 45.59 years, SD = 10.86) and 73 Taiwanese couples (M age = 39.55 years, SD = 9.13). Results revealed that romantic attachment anxiety was negatively associated with marital satisfaction in the Taiwanese couples; in the Thai couples, neither romantic attachment anxiety nor avoidance was associated with marital satisfaction. The findings showed that these parents still felt stronger affiliation with the Chinese than with the English culture. There were also significant positive associations between their affiliation to Chinese culture and their Chinese-specific parenting as well as between their affiliation to English culture and authoritative parenting. However, the length of their U.K. residence did not affect their Chinese cultural identity or affiliation. These findings showed the strong cultural identity of Chinese immigrants to Britain and suggested that the parenting of Chinese immigrant parents may be modified in the course of acculturation.

After providing an overview of the HEP framework, existing research in the investigative interviewing at each of the eight levels of the HEP framework is reviewed. Biases in investigative interview experts' decision making is also revealed at biasability between expert conclusions (Level 8). Moreover, no published data is available in reliability within experts at the level of observations (Level 1) or conclusions (Level 5), biasability within or between expert observations (Level 3 and 4) and biasability within expert conclusions (Level 7). The findings highlight areas where future research and practical endeavor are much needed investigative interview.

Unfortunately, most of the research has only examined self-report data; studies including both
self-report and observational data are still very rare.
This study examined the disciplinary methods of mothers (of 5- to 7-year-old children) in a cross-cultural sample (N = 89: 30 Chinese in Taiwan, 30 Chinese immigrants in the UK, and 29 non-immigrant white English in the UK) using both questionnaires and observational data.
Cultural differences were found between groups both in reported, as well as observed parenting. The Taiwanese mothers reported greater use of Chinese-specific parenting methods as well as physical coercion and were observed to use more (gentle and assertive) physical intervention than the Chinese immigrant and English mothers. The Chinese immigrant mothers reported a higher degree of granting child autonomy than the Taiwanese and English mothers. These findings provided valuable insights into parenting in different cultural contexts, underscoring the importance of examining both reported and observed behaviour, in order to understand human development from a holistic perspective.
