This research takes inspiration from several sources. Firstly, from my own interest in Maurice Ra... more This research takes inspiration from several sources. Firstly, from my own interest in Maurice Ravel , particularly his orchestrations/transcriptions/arrangements of music that were originally composed for the piano. These have caused me to ask these questions: when Ravel composed a piece of orchestral music, did he see the previously composed piano scores as sketches to the final article? Similarly, did he see the piano compositions of other composers as 'fair game' to be used as his own to orchestrate? Put more simply, why did he feel the need to orchestrate other colleagues' and his own music?
