documentary She Makes Comics, her film is the first to explore women behind the “ninth art.” Stotter is a recent graduate of Wesleyan University and is currently based in Los Angeles. She has worked on several short films and is now producing her first full-length feature. As she explains in the interview below, She Makes Comics is a passion project, borne out of her love of comics and a desire to see greater representation of women in the medium.

The book examines film representations of Israeli women, including narratives in classic Israeli films as well as those in contemporary feminist films. Her book reveals how many feminist filmmakers in Israel have used the medium to reclaim women's stories, showcasing accounts of sexual abuse and prostitution, as well as the rape culture and the often "negative impact of militarism on women's experience." In the past decade, Israeli female filmmakers have also been including subjects in their films from "society's geographical periphery," such as female foreign workers and women refugees.

The book shares insights into what it takes to succeed as a camerawoman and examines women's stories from the United States and around the globe. There are heartbreaking stories of loss and bravery and the very real dangers involved with shooting in some circumstances, and stories of women who have been (or were) positively fearless throughout their careers.

Most prominently, she is noted for elevating the position of “head of wardrobe” to that of “head of studio,” a far more involved job that included creating a unique creative vision for the films (Stamp 2012, 11-12). Since costume design was uncredited in silent films, many facts about West’s early work are impossible to verify; however, it is largely accepted that she designed costumes for D.W. Griffith’s (1875-1948) The Birth of a Nation (1915), and it is known that she spent two years working on Griffith’s Intolerance (1916) and was then in a successful collaboration with Cecil B. DeMille (1881-1959) on at least ten films.

I will examine the group protagonist structuring of the Oceans films (2001, 2004, 2007), and the interwoven storyline structuring of Traffic (2000) and Contagion (2011). I will also re-examine Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989) to make an argument for an atypical ensemble structuring. As a point of comparison, I intend to do a close study of Soderbergh’s Full Frontal (2002) to determine why this film was not successful and how the ensemble structuring might have contributed to this. From this analysis, I will reveal key elements necessary in writing the multi-protagonist film.

Though her character is positioned as a supporting role in the film, the complexity with which this character is drawn is crucial to the film’s success, particularly in the era when the film was released, and perhaps most interestingly in the sense that Streep had a significant hand in contributing to the development of the character in the final shooting script. As a point of comparison, I briefly address the “wife” roles in other prominent films from the 1970s, including Diary of a Mad Housewife (written by Eleanor Perry and directed by her husband Frank Perry), A Woman Under the Influence (starring Gena Rowlands, written and directed by her husband John Cassavetes), and The Stepford Wives (written by William Goldman), discussing the influence of the women’s movement on these projects, the representation of women in these specific roles, the audience response, and (briefly, as relevant) the career paths of the women and men involved in the making of these films. As a final point of comparison, I address the most recent noteworthy film examining the “wife” character: The Wife (2017), starring Glenn Close and written by Jane Anderson.

This analysis offers an overview of representations of motherhood in films, including some of the more prominent research published on this topic, as well as a review of cinema’s most memorable mother characters with mental illness. My analysis surveys both superficial and authentic portrayals of mental illness on screen and examines audience and critical responses to these characters. The focus of the paper is on the characters of Eve (Geraldine Page) and Mabel (Gena Rowlands). This work is an extension of my ongoing research on the representation of female characters on screen.
