John Mingers | University of Kent (original) (raw)

John Mingers

John Mingers is Professor of Operational Research and Information Systems at Kent Business School, University of Kent, and is Director of Research. Prior to that he was Head of the OR and Systems group at Warwick Business School. John studied Management Sciences for his first degree at Warwick University and later completed an MA in Systems in Management at Lancaster University and a PhD at Warwick.
His research includes the use of systems methodologies in problem situations - particularly the mixing of different methodologies within an intervention (multimethodology); critical realism as an underpinning philosophy for information systems and operational research; the development of the critical systems approach; autopoiesis (self-producing systems) and its applications; and, since becoming Director of Research, an unhealthy interest in journal rankings and citations. I am a founder of the Centre for the Evaluation of Research Performance
http://www.kent.ac.uk/kbs/applied-research/cerp.html
He published the first comprehensive study of autopoiesis - Self-Producing Systems: Implications and Applications of Autopoiesis (Wiley), and his recent book, “Realising Systems thinking: Knowledge and Action in Management Science” (Springer) includes chapters on the nature of information and its relations to meaning and knowledge.

Research paper thumbnail of Systems Thinking, Critical Realism and Philosophy: A Confluence of Ideas

Philosophy and Systems Thinking seeks to re-address the whole question of philosophy and systems ... more Philosophy and Systems Thinking seeks to re-address the whole question of philosophy and systems thinking for the twenty first century and provide a new work that would be of value to both systems and philosophy. This is a highly opportune time when different fields – critical realism, philosophy of science and systems thinking – are all developing around the same set of concepts and yet not realizing it. There is much of importance to be discussed and this book will prove accessible and valuable to both the systems thinking and philosophy communities.

Moreover, emphasis is being placed on the impact of the research rather than simply where it is published. The main metric for impact is the number of citations a paper receives. Traditionally this data has come from the ISI Web of Science but research has shown that this has poor coverage in the social sciences. A newer and different source for citations is Google Scholar. In this paper we compare the two on a dataset of over 1200 publications from a UK Business School. The results show that Web of Science is indeed poor in the area of management and that Google Scholar, whilst somewhat unreliable, has a much better coverage.

This paper has three purposes. First, is to demonstrate that Floridi’s information theory was largely prefigured by work car-ried out by Mingers and published some ten years earlier. This is simply a matter of setting the record straight, although the degree of commonality may provide some support for the theory. Second, to point out that there appears to be a degree of equivocation, or even contradiction, within Floridi’s theory concerning the ontological status of information – is it objective, independent of the receiver, or is it subjective, constructed by the receiver from the data they access? The paper argues strongly for an objective interpretation. Third, to point out extensions to Mingers ’ theory in terms of the social and pragmatic aspects of language, the processing of information into meanin...

Design/methodology/approach A hybrid citing-side, cited-side normalization method was developed and this was tested on a sample of 285 research monographs. The results were analyzed and conclusions drawn. Findings The method was technically feasible but required extensive manual intervention because of the poor quality of the Google Scholar data. Research limitations The sample of books was limited and also all were from one discipline —business and management. Also, the method has only been tested on Google Scholar, it would be useful to test it on Web of Science or Scopus. Practical limitations Google Scholar is a poor source of data although it does cover a much wider range citation sources that other databases. Originality/value This is the first method that has been developed specifically for normalizing books which have so far not been able to be normalized.
