Baridi Manyasi

Currently I am Director, Monitoring and Evaluation at the County Government of Kisumu. I previously was a Lecturer at Kenya School of Government, Moi University (City Campus), Zetec University, My Kenya University, and other training engagements.I would like to continue undertaking Research in Social fields and reach out to Institutions and personalities in articulating "Development Results" issues. SOC 311: CONTEMPORARY SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY OVERVIEW  Sociological Dilema (controversies); where t... more SOC 311: CONTEMPORARY SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY OVERVIEW  Sociological Dilema (controversies); where they have not agreede.g. Structure VS Agency, i.e. human action VS Society.  Social Facts -By Emile Durkheim; i.e. Conflict and Stability (consensus)-which of the two explains the existence in the society? -Looks at Karl Marx's view; also looks at Equilibrium i.e. Structural Functionalism  Gender and Sociological Analysis: Looks at Feminist theories (emerging theories); what should be the guiding principles; How can we bring these views into the Feminist Theory?; Is it representative of the individual?  Theory of Action: Talcott Persons  Sybamatic Hierarchy: Looking at the organisation of action, into systems; Not merely what you see people do, but how the cultural system controls, social system controls, personality system controls (physiological organism). Culture has a lot of control over the other systems i.e. it is culture that is paramound.  The patterned variables (Talcott Persons); where in every situation, there are two choices; we look at five dichotomous choices.  Sociological Approaches to group solidarity: What holds the group together? (Looking at ideas of Emile Durkheim); It is because they are forced to be together? Normativist Approach -Say, it is due to norms; Structuralist Approach (society is divided into different antagonistic groups (Karl Marx); Functionalists Approach -Like Structural Functionalist. Rational Choice Approaches; In the area of Economics, they want to maximise gains, people join groups to gain from them.  Communities: Ferdinand Tonnes-In his, Gemenshalf (Community), and Geshelshaft (Association). Routinization of Social Life -We are operating as if we have programmed ourselves; Link with Max Weber in bureaucracy.  Theory of Development and Underdevelopment in the society  The Modernisation Theory and the critics of the theory. Contemporary Sociological Theories, Moi University Lecture Notes 2  The World Systems Theory; modernization seems to blame the power, while World Systems theory sees other forces such as IMF and World Bank as the cause of poor show of the economy.
