The cornerstone of any nursing curriculum is preparing graduates to deliver safe, high-quality nursing care. The COVID-19 pandemic has, indeed, revolutionized nursing education with the adoption of innovative pedagogical strategies like blended learning. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of video-based instruction to determine students' performance and confidence levels in selected nursing procedures. It also intends to investigate the factors that influencing students' nursing skills performance and confidence level. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design. This study included a total enumeration of 44 enrolled students in the nursing diploma program. The researcher divided the students into two groups by quota selection. The control group had a face-to-face teaching session in the lab. For the study group, the students recorded videos of the said procedures three times and submitted them to the faculty through the Blackboard platform. The study group scored significantly higher than the control group in different demonstration times. Specifically, the students from the study group got handwashing performance scores higher in both the first, second trials and during the final evaluation than those in the control group. This study concluded how students' motivation and participation could improve learning outcomes. This blending of web-based training and audiovisual media provides numerous benefits. The mean self-confidence score is significantly higher in the study group than in the control group. This experience illustrates how audiovisual material can be employed to teach other nursing subjects.

As patients are recovered from the respiratory problems, they can be weaned from mechanical ventilation (MV). Weaning represents a major challenge in critically ill patients' management. Weaning from MV imposes more stress on the patients as it leads to feeling of helplessness. Excessive and inappropriate use of sedatives can result in cardiovascular instability, prolongation of MV and ventilator associated pneumonia. Critical care nurses have an important role in alleviating stress manifestations and helping patients' holistic healing. Non-pharmacological approach is recommended to be used prior to or in conjunction with sedatives use. Listening to Holy Quran Recitation (HQR) is a kind of spiritual support for Muslim patients. Spiritual care has been recommended as it can affect patient's comfort. Accordingly, spiritual support strategies including HQR have been recently proposed to achieve better outcomes of critically ill patients which is the aim of the current study. Methods: A quasi experimental research design was used in this study. Physiological and psychological parameters were measured before and after HQR in the study group. Results: All differences between physiological and psychological parameters of the study group before and after HQR were statistically significant (P= 0.00). All differences between initial and the final measurement values of physiological and psychological parameters of the control group were statistically not significant. The mean values of heart rate, respiratory rate, mean arterial blood pressure, and shortness of breath of the study group after HQR were lower than that in the control group. Conclusion: HQR is an effective non-pharmacological strategy to improve vital signs, SpO 2 , shortness of breath and anxiety level for mechanically ventilated Muslim patients undergoing weaning. In addition, it can increase spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) duration for patients undergoing weaning from MV.

Background: About 50%-80% of critically ill patients develop delirium during their intensive care... more Background: About 50%-80% of critically ill patients develop delirium during their intensive care unit (ICU) stay. Adverse events associated with delirium can range from functional disability, cognitive and psychological impairment, dementia and even death. Removal of invasive lines, self-extubation, prolonged sedation and ventilation therapies which delay the ICU liberation, and increase the overall hospital length of stay are also negative squeals of delirium. Delirium has series of adverse events that are not limited to the associated morbidies and mortality, but also extended to include the burden placed on caregivers, families and healthcare services, in addition to increasing the cost of care. Using auditory stimulation as a non-pharmacological intervention can stimulate the affected neural networks, accelerate brain plasticity and avoid sensory deprivation that could induce pain, agitation, and delirium and slow down the patients' recovery. It is evident that familiar auditory stimuli by a familiar voice is eliciting more responses to auditory tones as it can grasp patients' attention without much effort and disrupts ongoing cognitive activities. Accordingly, multicomponent family reorientation strategy has recently been proposed to achieve better outcomes. Methods: A quasi experimental research design was used in this study in which one tool was used for data collection: "Confusion Assessment Method-intensive care unit (CAM-ICU)". Results: During the five-day intervention period, the delirium free days was all the days in the family voice group, four days in the unfamiliar voice group and no free days in the control group which indicates a significant difference among groups on number of delirium free days (M C p < .001*). Conclusion: Reorienting critically ill patients through recorded messages is an effective strategy to reduce the incidence of delirium. Furthermore, using a familiar family sound is more effective in reducing delirium as proved by the number of delirium free days. During the five-day intervention period, the family voice group shows more delirium free days than the unfamiliar voice group. The intervention used in this study is easy, costless and effective strategy in prevention of delirium among critically ill patients.

Methods: Two hundred geriatric patients provided consent were interviewed and the data collected using the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale (PAIS), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), In addition to demographic and clinical data. Data was collected from Kasr Al-Aini Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, Cairo, Egypt after the study protocol was approved (Approval No. 10), August 2019. Correlations using Pearson and Spearman coefficients as well as binary logistic regression were used using The IBM SPSS software package, version 26. Results: The psychological distress domain was found to have the highest mean score (14.2±4.5) among the psychosocial adjustment domains, whereas extended family relations were found to have the lowest mean score 6.8 ± 2.09. The study also found that there was a significant negative correlation between the overall scores of the psychosocial adjustment scale and the multidimensional scale of perceived social support (p <0.001). Moreover, a significant negative correlation between the overall scores of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and the following sub-domains of the Psychosocial Adjustment Scale: health care orientation, extended family relations, and psychological distress (p <0.001) was detected. Those with high level of perceived social support were 0.044 times more likely to have high psychosocial adjustment compared to those with low level of perceived social support (p<0.001). Females were twice less likely to have high psychosocial adjustments compared to the males. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that there is an association between perceived social support and elderly' psychosocial adjustment. In addition, perceived social support is found to be an independent predictor of psychosocial adjustment. Therefore, establishing or strengthening the existing social structures throughout the treatment journey is recommended for elderly cancer patients.

Family engagement means active partnerships between health care providers' families. Family engag... more Family engagement means active partnerships between health care providers' families. Family engagement in ICU takes different forms depending on the needs of critically ill patients. Families could be engaged in the tangible and the intangible aspects of critically ill patients' care. Family engagement can improve patients' outcomes, reduce family anxiety and enhance family members' satisfaction in addition to reducing patient's stress and anxiety, lowering delirium prevalence, reducing length of hospital stay, enhancing patients' satisfaction and experience with care. Many research studies focus on the intangible aspect of family participation in patient care. There is a remarkably little research that investigate family members' contribution to care in the ICU. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine perception of ICU nurses toward family engagement in patients' care. Methods: a cross-sectional, descriptive research design was used in this study in which one instrument was used to assess the perception of ICU nurses toward family engagement in patients' care. The subjects were comprised of all ICU nurses who had previous experience for at least one year from 8 ICUs in 2 selected university hospitals. Results: patients' hygiene is the top reported aspect of engagement followed by oral feeding, distraction activities and assisting with ambulation. These are reported respectively by 62.05%, 60.33%, 56.89%, and 49.13% of the studied nurses in all ICUs. The least reported aspect of family engagement in all ICUs (2.58%) is the oral care. Conclusion: Families are involved in the tangible and the intangible aspects of patients care in ICUs but they are involved more in the intangible aspects of patients care. Recommendations: There is a need to establish polices, procedure, and protocols for family engagement in ICUs. An assessment tool to determine family willingness to be actively participating in their patients' care and the aspects of care they can be engaged in should be available.

It gives students the chance to accommodate and solve problems independently, it can increase motivation during the learning process, and it offers students direct feedback. Students will also receive an authentic learning experience, increasing their level of knowledge retention. It can assist nursing educators in improving learning outcomes. Aim: This study aimed to investigate and evaluate the impact of computer-based scenarios on undergraduate nursing students’ decision-making skills. Sample: There was a total sample of 112 nursing students who were enrolled in a critical care nursing course at the College of Applied Medical Sciences in Saudi Arabia. These students were divided into two groups. Methods: The two groups were taught the same topic for one week. Two case scenarios were given to each group during the clinical rotation. The study group used the computer-based case scenario, and the control group used the paper-based cas...

Coping styles are the only approaches that help students to overcome the stress and enhance the educational success. The study aimed to identify stress are as and coping styles of nursing students. A descriptive research design was used. 118 nursing students were and workload (12.14+4.19) and taking care of patients (10.14+4.19). The highly used coping styles were clinical workload found in the courses is the common stressor for last year students.

Research paper thumbnail of Effect of family reorientation messages on delirium prevention among critically ill patients

Results: During the five-day intervention period, the delirium free days was all the days in the family voice group, four days in the unfamiliar voice group and no free days in the control group which indicates a significant difference among groups on number of delirium free days ( M C p < .001*).
