Who We Are

Kehilat Hadar Shaare Zedek (KHSZ) is an independent, traditional, egalitarian, and lay-led community. We began as two separate congregations, Kehilat Hadar and Shaare Zedek, and started operating our services and programming jointly in 2019. We meet in a brand new building – comprised of a beautiful sanctuary featuring Shaare Zedek’s 100-year-old stained glass, a spacious social hall, classrooms and a terrace – on the site of Shaare Zedek’s historic building, at 210 West 93rd Street on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

We hold weekly Shabbat morning services, holiday services, and occasional Friday night services, as well as learning, meals, an annual Shavuot retreat, and other communal programming. Our community also benefits from weekday minyanim and classes, which are run on-site by a separate entity, Hadar Institute. Our multigenerational, family-friendly community is home to long-time residents and newcomers alike. We come together to build a warm, inviting community through prayer, communal meals, hosting each other in our homes, and supporting each other during life cycle events or challenges.

We are excited to welcome you!

Values

We are a vibrant community that elevates traditional and egalitarian Judaism on the Upper West Side. Our multigenerational community empowers individuals and families to grow their commitment to Jewish practice, while strengthening the bonds among all who seek traditional, uplifting, lay-led davening. We draw on Congregation Shaare Zedek’s storied history with Kehilat Hadar’s spirit of innovation.

Community Values

Empowerment

We encourage the continued growth and development of our community members and are sustained by those who collaboratively lead the community in prayer, learn and teach Torah, pursue social justice, share meals, and build relationships.

Dignity

We value each member of our community and are committed to ensuring that all are treated with dignity regardless of background, proficiency, or personal practice. This includes offering paths toward membership that are not contingent on financial contributions.

Care and Connection

We promote a culture and practice of connecting and caring for all generations, across many stages of life, in moments of celebration and grief.

Responsiveness

We strive to meet the needs of our community today and to be responsive to our community’s needs as they evolve over time.

Operational Values

Excellence

We strive for excellence in all that we do together through regular and consistent services and programs, while always seeking to improve.

Volunteerism

We depend on the skills, talents, and interests of those who call our community home, cultivating and appreciating their leadership and commitment.

Intentionality

We are deeply intentional when making decisions that will determine communal practices, seeking input from community members but never deviating from our core commitments to egalitarianism, traditional liturgy, and halacha.

Agility with Stability

We embrace the stability of permanent space while maintaining the agility of an independent minyan.
