The meeting started an ongoing dialogue that recognizes the fact that HCI is still in its infancy in the Arab world and explores challenges and opportunities for shaping the future of HCI in the region. The meeting was further followed by three successful meetings in SIGCHI sponsored events that included general discussions about the state of HCI research in Arab countries, and a thematic discussion on exploring participatory design practices with Arab communities. In this workshop, we build on the momentum generated by our previous meetings, and attempt to draw a roadmap for HCI research and practice in Arab world. Our goal is to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss case studies from their own work, share experiences and lessons learned, and envision the future of the field in this area. We plan to share the results of our discussions and research agenda with the wider CHI community through various social and scholarly channels.

These events granted insight into how diversity discourses are approached within the CHI community. From these recognitions we provide examples of how diversity and inclusion can be promoted at future SIGCHI events. These include fostering connections between attendees, discussing 'polarizing' research in a conservative political climate, and encouraging contributions to the growing body of HCI literature addressing feminisms and related subjects. Finally, we suggest how these approaches and benefits can translate to HCI events extending beyond CHI, where exclusion may routin...

However, there is a distinct lack of connection between these disparate but inherently connected research spaces. This SIG meeting aims to bring scholars together to discuss emerging and evolving issues of feminist research, and finding ways of using feminist theory and practice as a tool in future HCI research. Ultimately, the SIG will facilitate the engagement of a community of feminist HCI researchers, designers, and practitioners. It brings together those who may feel isolated in their respective research groups or universities to create a platform for feminist thought within SIGCHI and facilitate collaboration to proactively move towards the mainstreaming of feminism in HCI.

This has included but is not limited to, work on designing within patriarchal contexts, designing around issues of gender and sexual orientation and designing around literacy. In tandem, local HCI initiatives such as ArabHCI [3] have emerged to address the misrepresentation of these populations in HCI research, highlighting the fact that Western originated design methods would require delicate adaptations to suit non-Western cultural contexts. With the same approach towards inclusivity and co-existence the aim of this workshop is to bring together HCI researchers and practitioners who engage in studies and interventions within Muslim majority communities around the world. The goal is to understand the Muslim identity and perceptions around it, the unique constraints and limitations within Muslim communities and to identify core issues and concerns within these populations. We will explore the following themes: refugees and islamophobia; Muslim feminism and Digital financial services.

In particular, social media and its impact on democratic practices. The region came to the forefront once more with the refugee crisis with many of those studies address Arabs as users of technologies designed and developed in Western countries. Our experience working/researching HCI motivates us to assert that current research on Arab HCI mostly deals with this population in a superficial way and is yet to reflect the depth and richness of the Arab culture as well as the diversity of the socio-political and economic aspects of the region. This one-day workshop aims to bring together HCI researchers/practitioners from the Arab World with those who are conducting/interested in research in this context. The goal is to start a dialog that leverages our "insider" understanding of HCI research in the Arab context to explore challenges and unique opportunities for future research.

The diversity and cultural richness of the region were not fully communicated to Western technology makers. Therefore, our research agenda was set to increase the visibility of local HCI researchers’ perspectives and expertise and to explore the methodological means by which the authentic voices of Arab users could be included in the technology design processes. HCI courses are gaining more popularity in Arab academic institutions despite the fact that HCI’s interdisciplinary nature and its link to humanities and art make it challengresearchers. At the core of this dialogue is our commitment to communicate the contextual challenges hindering Arab researchers from participating in the global HCI community to the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI). We contributed to SIGCHI’s decisions of providing a reduced fee for emerging economies and offering an early career researcher mentorship program. ArabHCI’s inauguration and success as a regional initiative were featured twice in the diversity and inclusion events at the SIGCHI flagship conference in 2017 and 2019. Furthermore, four research-focused meetings were hosted at top HCI international conferences that encouraged an exchange of views between Arab and nonArab HCI researchers. The 46 papers presented in those workshops depicted HCI research in 10 Arab countries: Saudi Arabia, ing for computer science educators to introduce it to students. One of ArabHCI goals is to promote a broader and deeper teaching agenda that goes beyond a focus on user interface guidelines. HCI concepts, we believe, could be integrated when students are taught about emerging technologies such as wearable devices, virtual/augmented reality, brain-computer interfaces, and autonomous vehicles. A smooth interaction design is essential to the success of these technologies. Additionally, to help students grasp the different means by which users could be engaged in the design, it is important to introduce design methods as well as quantitative and qualitative research to HCI curricula. Since its inception, ArabHCI has embarked on a journey to establish an intercultural dialogue between the global HCI community—a.k.a. Western technology designers—and Arab HCI A RA B HC I IS AN initiative that started in 2016 to promote HumanComputer Interaction (HCI) research and education in Arab countries, and to build a community of Arab and non-Arab researchers interested in the Arab context (https:// arabhci.org). Notably, the inception team consisted of all Arab female researchers. The Arab world consists of 22 countries across Asia and Africa and is considered one of the world’s most strategic territories to host renowned political events such as the Arab Spring and the refugee crisis; all of which featured unique appropriations of existing social media technologies. The initiation of ArabHCI was largely motivated by concerns about how Arab users have been sometimes misrepresented in global HCI research that focused on ArabHCI: Five Years and Counting

Due to the importance of the ethics for individuals and societies, many of universities started to offer ethics courses in their curricula. Their aim is to give students a full understanding of their rights, and how they might act ethically when they face different situations. Since the ethics content can be undesirable course for students, some faculty may face various challenges to teach such courses. Moreover, some students might face obstacles to understand the ethics principles and its importance. Therefore, the application of active learning concepts along with engaging in community service is one of solutions to enhance the learning process. This paper will share our experience of teaching the “Ethical Issues in Information Technology” course to information technology undergraduate students. In this paper, we describe a diary-log study of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) usage amongst youth in Arabic-Speaking populations. This qualitative study examined diary logs of CMC patterns of 61 youth participants, ages ranging between 14 to 24 years. Analysis involved trend analysis of the type of messages exchanged, size and timing of the messages, emotional expressions in CMC exchanges amongst youth, and the language transformations that are relevant to the design of interactions in CMC (e.g. introduction of Latin characters in the native Arabic language CMC due to constraints in mobile devices’ interfaces), and the CMC modes which involved attachments such as images, media or photos. Three variables were examined in the logs; gender, time of logging and linguistic patterns. Findings of this study showed that gender variations were not prevalent in CMC usage in the context of native Arabic-speaking youth. Results also suggest that patterns of CMC amongst youth vary according to the day of the week as well as the time of day. Prevalence of language transformations in Arabic CMC was also examined across genders and variations were found in the adoption of formal and colloquial CMC in Arabic. Implications for the design of CMC in the context of Education and Research will be discussed.
