The widespread of technology and streaming platforms have highlighted the importance of audiovisu... more The widespread of technology and streaming platforms have highlighted the importance of audiovisual translation. Audiovisual materials consist of four components: verbal-acoustic, verbal-visual, nonverbal-visual, and nonverbal-acoustic. Subtitlers usually focus on rendering the verbal-acoustic component (i.e., the dialogue) and rarely focus on the verbal-visual component. Therefore, this article aims to identify the subtitling strategies used in rendering the verbal-visual components that are displayed simultaneously with the dialogue. The data are taken from the docudrama The Social Dilemma. Gottlieb’s (1992) typology is used to identify the applied subtitling strategies. The analysis demonstrates that the subtitler employed seven subtitling strategies: transfer, paraphrase, imitation, deletion, expansion, condensation, and resignation. Dictionaries of all types are an indispensable tool for both professional and trainee translators... more Dictionaries of all types are an indispensable tool for both professional and trainee translators. However, the literature on trainee translators indicates that the skills associated with dictionary use have not been given the required attention. Knowing which dictionaries to use and how to use them efficiently when engaged in the translation process are significant aspects of translation pedagogy. In fact, facilitating the development of effective dictionary use helps develop translation competence in general. Therefore, the present article reports on a qualitative case study of successful translation students’ usage of and preferences for various types of dictionaries. The results show that successful trainee translators use dictionaries to locate synonyms or better translations for target words. Given that the dictionary is an indispensable tool used by translators and translators in the making alike, research in this regard is crucial to uncover the uses and attitudes of this group of dictionary users’ towards different forms of dictionaries. Revealing translation trainees’ practices facilitates the correction of wrong ones and helps in guiding students towards the efficient use of dictionaries. The significant role listening plays in second language acquisition is now well-established. Howe... more The significant role listening plays in second language acquisition is now well-established. However, despite changes in the perception of second language (L2) listening, it remains an under-researched skill. Listening is the most challenging of the four language skills in terms of both learning and teaching. This calls for more research to tackle issues with the teaching and learning of L2 listening. Expertise is thought to be the end result of engaging in extensive amounts of deliberate practice. However, metacognitive instruction and deliberate practice done separately are rarely enough to achieve L2 listening expertise. Thus, this article proposes a new approach to L2 listening, in which metacognitive instruction is an essential element, but not an end in itself. This new approach to L2 listening integrates both metacognitive instruction and deliberate practice to gain benefits and overcome the shortcomings in the two approaches. This paper reports on the metacognitive listening strategies used by second language successful l... more This paper reports on the metacognitive listening strategies used by second language successful learners when listening to a text in English. It is part of a larger study where 82 students were surveyed in regards to metacognitive listening strategies using the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ). Three successful listeners from among the 82 students volunteered to take part in the verbal reports (think-aloud protocols) in an attempt to uncover the metacognitive listening strategies this group of learners uses. The research question I sought to answer was: What are the metacognitive strategies that successful level four female Saudi students at the College of Languages and Translation at King Saud University report using while listening to a text in English? Results indicated that when listening in English, this group of learners use problem-solving and directed attention strategies more often than other types of metacognitive strategies.

The last two decades have witnessed a growing interest in vocabulary items consisting of more tha... more The last two decades have witnessed a growing interest in vocabulary items consisting of more than a single word in the field of English language teaching (ELT) (Nation & Meara, 2002, p. 36; Schmitt, 2000, p. 96). Researchers in the area came to notice that language is produced by native speakers as 'chunks' rather than single words (Schmitt, 2000, p. 42; Read, 2000, p.20). This entails that if language instructors wish English as a foreign language (EFL) learners to attain native-like proficiency, they should be trained on the use of chunks of language and equipped with a large number of them. Such multiple-word items, Schmitt (2000) explains, constitute a rather high percentage of the English language and are drawing more attention. Thus, these chunks of language are worth spending time on in any language course. The purpose of the following paper is twofold: on the one hand, the researcher intends to get ELT instructors aware of the concept of collocations and its significance, for those who are not already aware of this aspect of language. On the other hand, the researcher aims at suggesting ways to help learners develop collocational knowledge.
