This study examined the audience perspective on what constitutes quality television news programs... more This study examined the audience perspective on what constitutes quality television news programs and the effects of commercialization on news content with regards to news quality.The media is a commercial enterprise like any other business investment venture, it therefore seeks to create and supply products that are suited and demanded by its clients. Clients of all products and services demand the best quality of all they seek to purchase. The tenets of social responsibility consider quality news programs to constitute in-depth and analytical news coverage that serves the society in terms of development and ensures information dissemination for social good. The study indicated that the audience instead preferred non-comprehensive, non-analytical news stories. Based on this analysis, it was evident that quality news programs, according to audience depend on how informative it is with regards to current affairs. Kenya and Singapore attained independence from the British government nearly at the same time in the year 1963. Ironically Singapore is an emerging third world economy with its GDP over seven times the Kenyan GDP. As per the 2011 statistic, Singapore’s GDP was estimated at over Kshs.20 trillion and Kenya’s 2.8 trillion. Kenya is still characterized by high rates of unemployment, high poverty rates, poor housing, poor healthcare and low of life rates expectancy and other characteristics of third world countries. The participation is not just mere appearance in project deliberations meetings but to be involved in all aspects of the project from initiation to completion. Poor achievement of sustainable development agenda in the county of Baringo has resulted to increased poverty level, increased illiteracy level, increased health risks challenges, insecurity, household income per day being below 1 USD, devastating natural occurrences (flooding of Lakes Baringo and Bogoria, famine, hunger) and poor road network access continues to be experienced. The study sought to examine the role of vernacular radio stations in conflict management and enha... more The study sought to examine the role of vernacular radio stations in conflict management and enhancing peaceful co-existence in Kenyan society. Vernacular radio stations have in the past been incriminated in the past for promoting discussions and providing a plat form for hate speech. Such discussions have been fo und to be stereotypical, lacking in facts and often sen sationalized. The study therefore sought to examine vernacular radio station content and talk to a samp led editors and radio station manager. The study found that some discussions did not differentiate comment, con jecture and factual contributions on the various se nsitive issues during discussions that threatened peaceful o-existence and conflict situation in Kenya. Some of the discussions analyzed contained unsubstantiated clai ms. The unsubstantiated claimed bordered on negativ ethnic contributions, insensitive contributions to topics without understanding the content and also c riticizing concerned parties witho...
