Injury accounts for more than 50% of deaths in children and is the third leading cause of death after cancer and atherosclerosis in all age groups. Thoracic trauma is one of the leading causes of death in all age groups and accounts for 25–50% of all traumatic injuries in the world. Material and methods In this retrospective study, fatal cases of thoracic trauma autopsied during the period 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2009 were analysed at the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, JN Medical College, Belgaum, Karnataka. Results and discussion In the present study, 67.8% of victims were 40 years old or younger. Women were less involved than men, with a ratio of 1:2.2. Conclusion Further establishment of ‘hi-tech trauma centres’ at each district level is the present need.

In this whole process the advantage is taken by an adult with the child. The POCSO Act of 2012, a gender-neutral law, set the legal age of consent at 18 for both boys and girls. Consensual sexual act with children by any person is illegal. When the severity of the punishment for sexual offences is in consideration, the Indian law discriminates against women depending on their age. Children between 5 and 12 years were found to be more at risk.

Head injury or cranio-cerebral injury as defined by the National Advisory Neurological Disease an... more Head injury or cranio-cerebral injury as defined by the National Advisory Neurological Disease and Stroke Council is “a morbid state resulting from gross or subtle structural changes in the scalp, skull and/or the contents of the skull produced by mechanical forces”. Among these 540 cases with history of injury, 205 cases had head injury that were admitted and treated in the hospital including both discharged and expired cases. Out of 205 cases, 175 (85.37%) were males and 30 (14.63%) were females. Male to female ratio is 7:1. As the head injury is a complex phenomenon of multiple causation, there is no single remedy that will prevent it, what is required is an organized teamwork by people in many disciplines like education, engineering, medical, law enforcement agencies for effective prevention of occurrence of head injuries and their fatalities.

During this period total of 51 deaths due to blunt abdominal trauma were autopsied. The peak age at risk in this study is 31 – 40 years followed by 21–30 year age group. Road traffic accident was the common causative factor (74.5%) while Splenic injury was the common post-mortem finding (52.9%). In most of the cases cause of death was Persistent irreversible shock (62.7%).

It account for 2.1% of global mortality. A retrospective study of fatal cases of RTA was conducted at Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belgaum, Karnataka, India between 1-1-2004 to 31-12-2009. The majority of victims belonged to the age group 31–40 years (145 cases; 28.7%). Female were less involved than men with ratio of 1: 3.3. In our present study total vehicular accident fatalities comprised 506 (48.7 %) out of total 1039 medico legal cases autopsied during five years (2005 to 2009). Our study shows the overwhelming majority of the deceased (76.9%) were males. This study shows that most of the deaths in road traffic accidents, take place either within 24 hours or on the spot of injury which is very alarming and highlights the need for taking urgent st...

Atrazine passes the most stringent, up-todate safety requirements in the world. In 2006, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) re-registered atrazine based on the overwhelming evidence of safety from nearly 6,000 studies. However its use is controversial due to widespread contamination in drinking water and its association with birth defects, menstrual problems and cancer when consumed by humans at concentrations below government standards. Although it has been excluded from a re-registration process in the European Union, it is still one of the most widely used herbicides in the world. No information was found on the acute toxicity of products containing atrazine alone in human subjects.

Consumption of “prasad” caused him stupor and drowsy and later he was robbed. The investigation revealed the presence of datura in “prasad”. Here, a non-fatal case of accidental poisoning of datura in a male aged 35 years is presented along with a brief description about the management and literature review regarding datura poisoning.

It provides a valuable locus for forensic DNA typing in many circumstances. The field of forensic science has been benefited significantly from the identification, characterization, and basic understanding of the mitochondria. The mtDNA is maternally inherited, so that any maternally related individuals would be expected to share the same mtDNA sequence. This fact is useful in cases where a long deceased or missing individual is not available to provide a reference sample but any living maternal relative might do so.

Accidental poisoning, a common paediatric emergency, is one of the important causes of morbidity ... more Accidental poisoning, a common paediatric emergency, is one of the important causes of morbidity and mortality in children. More than half of all cases reported to the American Association of Poison Control Centers involve children under the age of six. And sadly, the majority of these accidental poisonings occur at home. However in India, the precise incidence of accidental poisoning among children is uncertain due to lack of reporting of all the cases. In India, pesticides are used abundantly for cultivation and are stored negligently at home, making them a potential source of accidental poisoning in children especially in rural areas. The best way to minimize paedi-atric accidental poisoning is by creating awareness about safe use and storage of poisonous substances and constant supervision of children. A case of accidental paedi-atric mass poisoning due to organophosphorus pesticide is being reported in this article.

The causes vary in different communities and so this study was done to know the epidemiology and outcome of burn injuries. A one year cross sectional study was done of all the burn injury patients admitted during April 1st, 2004 to March 31st, 2005. Data was collected using a pre designed and pre tested proforma from the patients themselves or their relatives and analyzed using chi square test and percentages. A total of 76 burn injury patients were admitted. Majority were females (52.63%) and sustained burn injuries at home (p=0.000). Maximum number of females were wearing synthetic clothes (p=0.000) and suffered from flame injuries (0.006).The case fatality rate was 31.58%.Burn injuries can be reduced by bringing about regulations to develop safer cooking appliances, promoting less inflammable fabrics to be worn at home and educating the community especially women.

A Retrospective analysis of cases of all childhood poisonings in District Hospital, Belgaum over 5 years in the 1 to 15 years age group were studied with respect to age, sex, type of poison and outcome. A total of 116 cases were studied. The most common ingested poisons were Organophosphorus compounds (38.16%). Most common age group involved was 1–3 yrs. The study showed male predominance. There was no significant season-wise variation observed. Manner of poisoning in 92% cases was accidental in nature. Amongst 116 cases, 40 cases were due to snake and insect bites. In this, 30 cases were due to snakes and 10 were due to insect and scorpion bite. Maximum number of cases observed was in the age group 4 and 12 years. There exists considerable debate about its applicability and reliability in age estimation. Objective: To find out the pattern of cranial vault suture closure in relation to age in 3 rd to 5 th decades of life; to detect bilateral and bisexual variations in cranial suture closure; and to specify any relationship between progression of union of cranial suture and age. Materials and method: Study design: Cross-sectional observational study. Study period: November 2008 to October 2009. Sample size: 70. All the autopsy cases, between 21 to 50 years of age were studied for relation between age and cranial suture closure. Ectocranial and endocranial closure pattern were studied for sagittal coronal and lambdoid sutures. Results: Endocranial fusion of cranial suture was more regular than ectocranial fusion, and was observed as early as 21-30 years. Coronal suture was the first to fuse. Closure was found earlier in females compared to males. No definite correlation was found to exist between age and suture closures. Conclusion: With this study, we couldn't find any possibility for suture closure to contribute substantially as one to the factors for age estimation.
