About

G.I. Robot is a DC Comics character that also appears in the HBO Max animated series Creature Commandos in which he is voiced by American actor Sean Gunn. The character was created by Robert Kanigher and artist Ross Andru in the 1960s as part of Star Spangled War Stories and Weird War Tales. The robot is a military android whose sole purpose is to kill Nazis. While the character had a minor online presence in the past, G.I. Robot became a popular mascot for anti-Nazi sentiments on Reddit and X / Twitter in January 2025 amid the controversy surrounding Elon Musk's salute and the Reddit ban on X.com links movement.

Origin

"G.I. Robot" is the collective name for a series of robot soldiers appearing in DC Comics, first introduced in the February 1962 Star Spangled War Stories #101. Created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Ross Andru, the original model, nicknamed "Joe," was designed as a mechanical soldier to aid humans in World War II. G.I. Robot was characterized by its loyalty, efficiency in combat and occasional struggles with ethical decisions, often confronting Nazi forces and other enemies.[1]

Despite its mechanical nature, the G.I. Robot often exhibited human-like traits such as camaraderie and a desire to protect their allies. Subsequent iterations included J.A.K.E. 1 (Jungle Automatic Killer – Experimental) and its successor, J.A.K.E. 2, who later teamed up with the Creature Commandos in Weird War Tales #93 (November 1980).[2] J.A.K.E. 2 retained similar traits but displayed a dry sense of humor and a programmed determination to defeat Nazi adversaries. This version of the G.I. Robot became the most popular iteration of the character and later provided inspiration for Creature Commandos.

Creature Commandos (2024)

The animated series Creature Commandos began streaming on Max on December 5th, 2024. All seven episodes were created by James Gunn, with Sean Gunn voicing G.I. Robot. The show follows a black ops team of monsters called "Task Force M" after they are removed from Belle Rive prison and assembled by Amanda Waller.[3]

Sean Gunn voices G.I. Robot, a former member of the WWII infantry unit Easy Company and a military android created for the sole purpose of killing Nazis. James Gunn praised Sean Gunn's voice acting for G.I. Robot, saying that he brought a "sweet mechanical innocence" to the character.[4] The character design for the robot was altered to have a "friendlier, wide-eyed" look as well.[5]
