Peninsula in the Küçükçekmece Lake Basin on the western side of Istanbul. The excavations uncovered
harbours, roads, squares, water structures, military, civil and religious buildings dating between the IVth
century BC and the XIth century AD. In the area coded as Area 8, surrounded by the remains of a fortress, a
building with a square exterior and octagonal interior plan, a domed structure and a crypt is thought to be a
martyrion due to its characteristics. During the excavations carried out in this building, a geometrical floor
slab in opus sectile technique was unearthed. In addition, mosaic pavements were recovered from the dome,
arches, vaults and walls of the building. The tesserae, which appear to have been embedded in a thick plaster,
are made of natural stones such as green, blue, yellow, red, white, marble, glass and tiles, as well as many gold
and silver gilded ones

illuminate the Hellenistic and Roman periods. These surveys
contributed to the exploration of the region’s settlement
patterns and interregional relations during the ancient
periods. Located at the crossroads of the Mediterranean Sea,
Black Sea and northern Thrace, the region comes to the fore
with amphora finds indicating the presence of intensive
maritime trade. However, Hellenistic pottery (3rd-1st
centuries BC), which constitutes an important group of finds
in the surface survey, will be emphasized in this work. The
forms of various table vessels, mostly black glazed, western
slope and mouldmade wares are associated with western
Anatolia, Greece and Thrace. The production techniques give
information about the social and economic identity of the
pottery in the region and processes of change in this identity.
Current trends in the production of Hellenistic pottery will
be examined through a comprehensive approach to cultural
relations through the distribution of regions and imported
samples

In 2004, the Istanbul Archaeological Museums Directorate carried out salvage excavations at the points where Istanbul's underground transportation network metro stations were planned, and the surprising finds that started with the discovery of Theodosius harbor continued with 38 ancient shipwrecks. The Istanbul Archaeological Survey in the west of Istanbul also uncovered the ancient harbors, ancient towns, castles, fortresses, dams and many other structures in 2007. The new finds shed light on the relationship of Constantinople, the Queen of Cities, with its immediate surroundings. In this part of the book, the harbours established on the western periphery of the capital.

Excavations determined two separate structures with intense and destructive damage and studies were performed about whether or not this damage was caused by destructive earthquakes in the region. A church structure with an apse had most pronounced intense damage and skeletons belonging to two hugging individuals were identified under the stones of a collapsed dome. Additionally, coins dated to 550 and other archeological materials reveal the destructive earthquake occurred after 550 in the period of the Emperor Justinian (527-565). If it had occurred during the reign of a different emperor, the coins would have been out of circulation. Strong destructive traces were identified in other structures spread over a large area in the excavation site, apa...

Analecta Archaeologica Ressoviensia 13, 109-134 the eastern end of thrace, situated between the Black sea and the sea of marmara, the Bosphorus and the anastasian wall, was in recent years the subject of polish-turkish archaeological investigations. the settlements on this territory formed constantinople's immediate hinterland in the Byzantine period. our studies focused on the beginning of the via egnatia. they included the famous suburb of hebdomon and the city of rhegion. a number of new sources were recorded as a result of our excavations, surface surveys, sonar prospections of water bodies, and queries of archive collections. they enabled us to examine the spatial and settlement structure of this area in the Byzantine period. the structure also included the settlement complex on the Firuzköy peninsula on lake Küçükçekmece, as well as settlements in athyras, selymbria, melantias, episkopia, angurina, schiza and daphnusion. they were elements of constantinople's communications and transportation system. the ceremony of adventus, i.e. welcoming the emperor, eminent guests or holy relics arriving in the capital, was also performed in this area. at present, these territories are undergoing a great deal of construction and infrastructure development, being part of the megapolis of istanbul. this puts the archaeological heritage located there in danger.

No information was obtained about its possible origins. Our study was aiming to narrow the possible provenance based on the stylistic characteristics. The stone is partly recovered and belongs to a bigger banquet scene. This style of depiction seen on many bas-reliefs and seal impressions recovered from the Late Hittite period from the South Eastern part of Anatolia. We date it to the end of 8th century B.C. and the origin has to be somewhere near the TurkishSyrian border.

This assemblage, containing pottery and metal fi gurines of Hittite character, a Cypriot pot sherd, several pot sherds of Balkan origin, a serious quantity of pure tin, and the substance of cassiterite used to extract tin, is intriguing in view of the fact that fi nds representing this period has far not been documented in this part of the Marmara region. Based upon this newly discovered second millennium BC assemblage from Bathonea, as well as the site's geographically important location within the Küçükçekmece Lake Basin on the southern shore of Thrace, it is argued here that the site may have acted as a port of trade within a network of trade during the Middle Bronze Age. In this article, our thoughts on the arrival of the fi nds to Istanbul and the relations between Istanbul and Hittites are shared.

Direct current resistivity and ground penetrating radar were applied. Direct current resistivity data were acquired with a multi-electrode system. To interpret the acquired data, software has been developed. The developed program solves the Poisson equation based on finite difference method in two dimensions in MATLAB environment. Inversion part of the code uses 'ridge regression' method. Since the data were collected on a flat area, we did not consider topography as interpretation. Ground penetrating radar data were collected with a300 MHz shielded antenna. Ground penetrating radar data were evaluated with a commercial software Prism 2.59. According to the interpretation of geophysical data, we suggested some excavation sites. The ancient ruins were found in the suggested area successfully.

New data are presented from non-destructive structural investigations in the Istanbul Yerebatan (... more New data are presented from non-destructive structural investigations in the Istanbul Yerebatan (Basilica) Cistern (placed in the top 10 sites in Turkey on the UNESCO World Heritage List) for restoration purposes. Degradation identified is discussed in relation to past earthquakes. Istanbul has housed many civilizations and searching for the traces of earthquakes in historical sites in a city which has experienced many large earthquakes during this process will assist in illuminating the past. It is possible to see traces of these earthquakes in the Yerebatan (Basilica) Cistern, serving as the largest enclosed water storage in Istanbul for nearly 1000 years. In line with this aim, research was completed with the high-resolution ground penetrating radar (GPR) method on both the floor and internal side walls of the cistern which is undergoing restoration. In this study, deformation was determined in the layers of water insulation on the floor of the cistern and it was understood these deformations were associated with degradation in the 336 columns acting as supports for the cistern. Drilling in anomalous sites determined by GPR screening identified traces of repairs and it was concluded that the degradation causing anomalies may be related to past earthquakes.
