Bu haliyle soru, çağın gerektirdiği aciliyetler, coğrafyanın özelliği ve kişinin kendi bireyselliğinin tekilliği, eğitimcinin incelediği ve öğrettiği konu-tarih, şiir, bilim, teknoloji-hep devrede olmak zorunda olduğundan, süregiden bir sorudur. Geleceğin afaki koşullarına göre şimdiden adımlar atmaya zorlayan soyutlamalarla harekete gerek yok, gelecek burada ve şimdi. Bununla birlikte, aşırı bir şimdiki zamancılık ve pragmatizm çağında geleceği bulmak da pek kolay görünmüyor. Aslında gelecek asla önümüzde değil de, hep arkamızda olacak. The research was conducted with a class of 11 preschool students from a low socio-economic background over a total of 23 class hours. Considering the interests and needs of the learners, among the environmental issues that should be explored during the preschool period, ‘soil’ was selected as the research topic. The instruments employed in the research were card-matching activities, mind maps, semi-structured interviews, and an exhibition evaluation form. Content analysis was applied in the examination of the collected data. As a result, it was concluded that students developed awareness about the structure of the soil, soil types, the usage areas of soil, soil pollution, and soil protection and that they could practice what they had learnt outside of the school environment. Although curriculum integration is theoretically desirable for many educators, what to integrate and how to integrate are often the big questions facing teachers working within education systems premised on a culture of segregated subject delivery. This quasi-experimental study reports on a 2-week inquiry of the implementation of an integrated unit of learning on motion problems, within upper secondary education in Turkey. Bu araştırmanın amacı Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu (TÜBİTAK) tarafından 3-6 ya... more Bu araştırmanın amacı Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu (TÜBİTAK) tarafından 3-6 yaş arası çocuklar için yayınlanmış 41 adet resimli çocuk kitabının toplumsal cinsiyet açısından incelenmesidir. Nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden belge (doküman) incelemesinin kullanıldığı araştırmada, resimli çocuk kitapları kitap başlığı, kitap kapaklarında bulunan karakterler, kitapların ana karakteri, kitaplardaki karakterlerin cinsiyet dağılımı, karakterlerin dış görünüşleri, karakterlerin tasvir edildikleri mekân, karakterlerin mesleki rolleri, eylemleri, kullandıkları araç-gereçler ve yazılı tasvirleri açılarından incelenmiştir. Veri analiz yöntemlerinden içerik analizinin kullanıldığı araştırmanın sonuçlarına göre resimli kitaplarda karakterlerin meslekleri, eylemleri ve gösterildikleri mekân yönünden toplumsal cinsiyet kalıp yargılarının dışında temsiller yer alsa da kitaplardaki görsel ve sözel metinlerde çoğunlukla toplumsal cinsiyet kalıp yargılarının sürdüğünü ortaya koymaktadır. Bu nedenle, resimli çocuk kitapları yayınlayan kurum, kuruluş ve yayınevlerine toplumsal cinsiyete duyarlı ölçütler geliştirerek kitapları bu ölçütler doğrultusunda hazırlamaları önerilmektedir.

The research was conducted with a class of 11 preschool students from a low socioeconomic background over a total of 23 class hours. Considering the interests and needs of the learners, among the environmental issues that should be explored during the preschool period, 'soil' was selected as the research topic. The instruments employed in the research were card-matching activities, mind maps, semi-structured interviews, and an exhibition evaluation form. Content analysis was applied in the examination of the collected data. As a result, it was concluded that students developed awareness about the structure of the soil, soil types, the usage areas of soil, soil pollution, and soil protection and that they could practice what they had learnt outside of the school environment. The research has two important implications: first, it shows that environmental awareness can be improved through indoor activities conducted in schools within low socioeconomic areas, where natural environmental conditions are not considered ideal. Second, thanks to being conducted as action research, teachers may create better opportunities for problems related to environmental awareness to be more visible in the classroom, thereby enabling them to resolve such issues.

The purpose of this research is to reveal the Curriculum Development Process in Türkiye from the ... more The purpose of this research is to reveal the Curriculum Development Process in Türkiye from the perspective of curriculum specialists. Phenomenology, one of the qualitative research designs, was used in the study, with a semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher, and content analysis applied in the analysis of the obtained data. The participants of the study consisted of 48 faculty members from 19 different universities. Interviews were conducted on a one-to-one, face-toface basis by the researcher, having visited each of the universities where the participants worked. According to the study's findings, three main interrelated problems are present in curriculum development in Türkiye: Policymakers that dominate curriculum development and decision making; Non-fulfilment of the sine-quanon (a thing that is absolutely necessary) of the curriculum development process; and, Abrupt and rapid changes introduced to curricula. However, these problem areas all stem from one major issue, policymakers' priorities, understanding, and thoughts about curriculum development and education. According to the solutions proposed by the study's participants, education should be accepted to have a supra-policy structure, and policymakers should be stakeholders in the curriculum development process rather than being the sole decision-makers. The topic of teaching and learning culture has been a matter of considerable interest to language... more The topic of teaching and learning culture has been a matter of considerable interest to language educators and much has been written about the role of culture in foreign language instruction over the past two decades. ESL students whose success in a new environment is conditioned not only by their mastery of the new language, but also, and especially, by their ability to negotiate the new culture. Media sources significantly affect students' of attitudes and dispositions towards themselves, other people and society especially in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. Building on the argument that learning a second language cannot be separated from the acquisition of the culture that it embodies, this paper argues that the design and adaptation of written media should reflect multiple perspectives and avoid prejudices in order to engage students in a process of uncovering and confronting cultural biases and facilitate cultural learning. The paper presents prejudices and other cultural biases learners have about target culture and discusses the positive effects of media on students. The paper suggests that media sources should be integrated into ESL curriculum in order to avoid prejudices, to enhance students' critical thinking and language skills and cultural biases, and to have a better understanding of new culture.

Th e purpose of this study is to evaluate the implications of Media Literacy Education (MLE) in T... more Th e purpose of this study is to evaluate the implications of Media Literacy Education (MLE) in Turkey by analyzing the Primary School Curricula in terms of MLE comparatively in Turkey, Ireland and Finland. In this study, the selection of Finland and Ireland curricula is related with those countries' being the pioneering countries in MLE and the structural diff erences in their curricula. In other words, the selection of these countries serves as a model in terms of approaching to MLE as a separate course (Turkey), in a strand unit (Ireland) and interdisciplinary manner (Finland). Th e method used in this study was document analysis. Th e documents analyzed in the study were the Primary School Curriculum of these countries and also documents, such as reports, books and journals, published by governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working on Media Literacy Education. Since a standard MLE for European countries does not exist, the curricula of Primary school education of Turkey, Ireland, and Finland were analyzed and interpreted in terms of (a) general outcomes and learning outcomes of the curricula, (b) content, (c) learning situation (methods and techniques) and (d) assessment and evaluation strategies. Th is study revealed that in the vision of Primary school curricula of Turkey, there are not any objectives related to MLE unlike Finland and Ireland Curricula. When analyzed the curriculum of each course this study also revealed that the objectives related to MLE are only implemented in Turkish Curriculum (1-5). On the contrary, in Ireland there are objectives related to MLE in English, Visual Arts, Mathematics, Irish language, and mostly in Science and Social Personal and Health (SPHE) curricula and it is included in the objectives of core curriculum in Finland. In addition to this, the objectives and learning outcomes of Turkey's MLE curriculum seems to aim at gaining knowledge and understanding the issues although they are focused on developing attitude, skills and values; and also developing active citizenship, intercultural communication, critical thinking skills and creativity in Finland's and Ireland's curricula. Considering the findings of the study, it is suggested that MLE should be a skill-based teaching rather than a stand-alone subject in Primary school curricula.

Well-chosen films can serve as a valuable pedagogical aid, both for classroom use and self-study. This article is about using films in language classrooms through a specially designed course, whose outline description is given, in the English Language Teaching Department at Kocaeli University. This article indicates that this course helps students to get a more realistic panorama of the cultural aspects of the language, to improve their language skills, to think critically and to develop their own ways of using films in language education.

The participants of the study consisted of 48 faculty members from 19 different universities. Interviews were conducted on a one-to-one, face-toface basis by the researcher, having visited each of the universities where the participants worked. According to the study's findings, three main interrelated problems are present in curriculum development in Türkiye: Policymakers that dominate curriculum development and decision making; Non-fulfilment of the sine-quanon (a thing that is absolutely necessary) of the curriculum development process; and, Abrupt and rapid changes introduced to curricula. However, these problem areas all stem from one major issue, policymakers' priorities, understanding, and thoughts about curriculum development and education. According to the solutions proposed by the study's participants, education should be accepted to have a supra-policy structure, and policymakers should be stakeholders in the curriculum development process rather than being the sole decision-makers. The topic of teaching and learning culture has been a matter of considerable interest to language... more The topic of teaching and learning culture has been a matter of considerable interest to language educators and much has been written about the role of culture in foreign language instruction over the past two decades. ESL students whose success in a new environment is conditioned not only by their mastery of the new language, but also, and especially, by their ability to negotiate the new culture. Media sources significantly affect students' of attitudes and dispositions towards themselves, other people and society especially in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. Building on the argument that learning a second language cannot be separated from the acquisition of the culture that it embodies, this paper argues that the design and adaptation of written media should reflect multiple perspectives and avoid prejudices in order to engage students in a process of uncovering and confronting cultural biases and facilitate cultural learning. The paper presents prejudices and other cultural biases learners have about target culture and discusses the positive effects of media on students. The paper suggests that media sources should be integrated into ESL curriculum in order to avoid prejudices, to enhance students' critical thinking and language skills and cultural biases, and to have a better understanding of new culture.

Th e purpose of this study is to evaluate the implications of Media Literacy Education (MLE) in T... more Th e purpose of this study is to evaluate the implications of Media Literacy Education (MLE) in Turkey by analyzing the Primary School Curricula in terms of MLE comparatively in Turkey, Ireland and Finland. In this study, the selection of Finland and Ireland curricula is related with those countries' being the pioneering countries in MLE and the structural diff erences in their curricula. In other words, the selection of these countries serves as a model in terms of approaching to MLE as a separate course (Turkey), in a strand unit (Ireland) and interdisciplinary manner (Finland). Th e method used in this study was document analysis. Th e documents analyzed in the study were the Primary School Curriculum of these countries and also documents, such as reports, books and journals, published by governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working on Media Literacy Education. Since a standard MLE for European countries does not exist, the curricula of Primary school education of Turkey, Ireland, and Finland were analyzed and interpreted in terms of (a) general outcomes and learning outcomes of the curricula, (b) content, (c) learning situation (methods and techniques) and (d) assessment and evaluation strategies. Th is study revealed that in the vision of Primary school curricula of Turkey, there are not any objectives related to MLE unlike Finland and Ireland Curricula. When analyzed the curriculum of each course this study also revealed that the objectives related to MLE are only implemented in Turkish Curriculum (1-5). On the contrary, in Ireland there are objectives related to MLE in English, Visual Arts, Mathematics, Irish language, and mostly in Science and Social Personal and Health (SPHE) curricula and it is included in the objectives of core curriculum in Finland. In addition to this, the objectives and learning outcomes of Turkey's MLE curriculum seems to aim at gaining knowledge and understanding the issues although they are focused on developing attitude, skills and values; and also developing active citizenship, intercultural communication, critical thinking skills and creativity in Finland's and Ireland's curricula. Considering the findings of the study, it is suggested that MLE should be a skill-based teaching rather than a stand-alone subject in Primary school curricula.

This article is about using films in language classrooms through a specially designed course, whose outline description is given, in the English Language Teaching Department at Kocaeli University. This article indicates that this course helps students to get a more realistic panorama of the cultural aspects of the language, to improve their language skills, to think critically and to develop their own ways of using films in language education.
