conference co-organised by the Kodolányi János University College, Hungary, and the October 6 University, Egypt, in Siófok, Hungary in 2006. The papers selected for this volume are representative of the issues that were dealt with during the event. The selection of theoretical papers and cases from seven countries in Europe and Africa aims to reflect the variety of approaches that arise in the debate on the interrelationship between culture and tourism. The studies presented in this book examine a number of different
aspects of this relationship: community attitudes towards tourism development, the cultural aspects of tourism employment, the role of intercultural communications in tourism, interculturality in tourism marketing, and the use of cultural resources in tourism development.

Consequently, the tourist milieu of a destination is based on an informative consensus that reflects the visitors' emotions and impressions. Due to its kaleidoscopic complexity and its dependence on human factors, the tourist milieu should be understood as a dynamic concept, thus, its assessment involves the simultaneous analysis of both subjective perceptions and objective facts.

As it is assumed by scientists that global climate change leads to an increase in the frequency of extreme events, it is becoming more important to understand how tourist demand is affected by extreme weather phenomena and how tourist destinations and tourist enterprises are able to react to such events. The paper presents some of the findings of a questionnaire survey carried out in 2007 that aims to investigate the short-and medium term implications of a tragic storm of 20 th August 2006 for Hungarians' travel decision making and travel behaviour. In addition, the vulnerability of Hungarian tourism to extreme weather phenomena and the industry's ability to cope with such events are assessed.

Although there is a wide range of integrated approaches to tourism development in rural areas identified in the literature, the event-based approach has not been at the centre of attention so far. This paper aims to fill this gap and reports on the collaborative capacity building of the LEADER Local Action Groups (LAGs) for rural tourism promotion in the context of an innovative, national-level event, the ‘Hungarian Rural Tourism Days’. A mixed-method approach was applied to explore and compare the supply-side views on the successes and failures of the event planning and organisation process and to derive key success factors of the event-based approach to Integrated Rural Tourism (IRT). The results provided evidence on the consequences of the failure to integrate local concerns into the event organisation process and highlighted the critical role of the intermediary management in establishing trust relationships with the rural service providers. Furthermore, it is argued that the major challenge of the event-based approach to IRT rests in the capacity of the stakeholders to collectively plan and implement a marketing strategy at the local level.
