This paper explores not only the attempt of integrating Speaking class activities and service lea... more This paper explores not only the attempt of integrating Speaking class activities and service learning but also its effects to the students. Under the topic of survey and interview with its environmental issues the students of third semester of English Department, Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta were asked to see closely the problems in their surroundings. By conducting a survey they examined the problems in their surroundings. Next, the result of the survey was shown to the experts and local officers by interviewing them in English. The students then were asked to find some solutions toward the problems. The last step was making a report by presenting their activities. Focus Group Discussion in reflection section was conducted to see whether or not the students were affected by the service learning activities. It shows that the activities contributed to the speaking skills ability and at the same time gave the awareness toward the problems found in their surroundings.

The research explored what types and how rhetorical strategy correlated with the linguistics feat... more The research explored what types and how rhetorical strategy correlated with the linguistics features in e-petitions through Change.org entitled "KPK dalam Bahaya". The data were e-petitions collected through Change.org. The analysis was holistically descriptive and included in qualitative research. The approach used critical discourse analysis by Fairclough that was using Fairclough's three-dimensional framework and the strategy of rhetoric by Aristotle. Those theories helped the researcher to find out how the rhetorical strategy and the linguistics features created persuasive meaning. The findings indicate that euphemism, metaphor, connectives, logical connectors, rhetorical questions, and modality support the rhetoric strategy constructing the meaning beyond the words. Through one of the rhetoric strategies, pathos persuades the readers to agree to the argument and sign the e-petitions. Due to the emotional appeals, all of these language instruments help the rhetoric to provoke the readers significantly.

Language helps advertising to bring it into reality. Both of them are able to not only create, but also exploit a particular object into cultural understanding and change people attitude and beliefs. Because of those reasons, the analysis focuses on finding out what kind of verbal and non-verbal language used in AXE‘s Body Spray Advertisement to shape that particular object, in this area, the image of women and how it shapes the image of women. By knowing in what way and how the advertisment shaping the women‘s image, the researcher may depict the identity of the women‘s image that the advertisement chooses to show. The data were taken from Youtube and collected the ten videos of commercial break through different years. The researcher selected the data which contained verbal and non-verbal language in the video. The data were analyzed using descriptive-qualitative method using
multidiciplinary approach. Speech acts and non-verbal languages took a role in the findings. The result of the study is showing that verbal and non-verbal language in AXE‘s Body Spray Advertisement affects to not only shape but also exploit women‘s image through media particularly in ads. Either verbal (speech acts) or non-verbal (gesture, bodily contact, physical proximity, interpersonal attitude, bodily posture, nodding, facial expression, eyes gazing, and appearance) affects the women‘s image reflected in AXE‘s Body Spray Ads.
