Mathematics education during these years has a significant effect on children's future lives. Play is a significant issue in children's lives and can be used as a way for teaching and learning. It presents a rich learning environment. In this study, therefore, we mainly focused on which mathematical concepts, skills and play types children preferred and found out mathematical concepts and skills observed in various play types children preferred while they were playing. This study was a qualitative study and 15 children from different age groups participated. The results of this study indicated that measurement related skills and number related skills were frequently used and pretend play and object play types were used mainly by children. Besides, pretend play and object play types were frequently used by children while they were using measurement and number related skills.

Methods: In this quantitative study, a figural and a written pattern related to daily life with the same mathematical structure were presented to participants and they were asked to write as many problems as they could. The problems were analyzed based on whether they were viable and then on the components of fluency, flexibility, and originality of creativity. Results: The results of the study indicated that, although the flexibility and originality scores in the figural pattern were higher, the only statistical difference was observed in the originality component. Moreover, it has been found that some of the participants wrote similar problems in both tasks; however, the problems in the figural pattern were inclined to be more difficult. Discussion: Developing students' creative-thinking skills is a main purpose of mathematics education research (Mann, 2006). However, the results of the research have indicated that the teachers' knowledge of how to develop students' creative-thinking skills is still lacking (Shriki & Lavy, 2012) and, consequently, students are provided with few opportunities to experience creative thinking and learning in class (Silver, 1997; Sriraman, 2005). Problem posing has a close association with creativity as well as with problem solving (Haylock, 1997; Silver, 1997). Therefore, to develop creative-thinking skills, learning environments should be enriched with problem-posing tasks. The results of this research do not assert that only one of the figural or written pattern types must be preferred to stimulate creative-thinking skills in the context of problem posing.

Considering the education given during the pre-school period, story books are one of the valuable educational materials for their growth in cognition. From this perspective, the purpose of this study is to investigate mathematical expressions in story books that are appropriate for pre-schoolers. This study followed qualitative approaches. In this study, story books were investigated with respect to the mathematical concepts and abilities found in national early childhood education curriculum. Randomly selected 30 story books were analyzed with documentary analysis method. Data were collected from the story books, each of which was reviewed by at least two researchers. The results indicated that story books generally concentrate on counting, spatial perception and time among mathematical concepts and abilities. On the other hand, patterns, operations (addition and subtraction), and graph are most rarely seen concepts in these books. Especially mathematical expressions related to problem solving skills highly emphasized in primary and secondary school curricula were not significantly observed in the story books investigated. Keywords: Early childhood education, mathematical elements, story books.

The effect of qualified mathematics education during early years has an impact on children’s future academic success. Main purposes of the present study are twofold; to examine children’s current 3D geometry thinking skills and to investigate the development of children’s 3D geometry thinking skills after a 3D training program developed by researchers and named as 3D in Early Childhood (3DinEC). A qualitative study with conveniently sampled preschool students was done. The age range of participant children varied from 60 months to 72 months; three girls and four boys. A semi-structured interview form, which included six abilities Pittalis and Christou (2010) determined, has totally 15 questions. Descriptive and content analysis methods were used. Findings of the present study indicated that participant children had a limited understanding regarding 3D geometric thinking. However, some of these thinking skills like identification of 3D geometric shapes and recognition of these shapes’ properties, etc. could be enhanced through various activities

This research explored pre-service teachers’ unforgettable mathematics experiences and how these experiences were related to their beliefs about preparing an unforgettable mathematics lesson. This is a case study with conveniently selected participants. Among the participants’ previous mathematics experiences, four categories were delineated: teacher, student, material, and method-related issues, although the most common findings were related to their teachers. Regarding beliefs, participants’ beliefs are presented within these categories (teacher, student, material, and method-related beliefs) as well as learning environment related beliefs are also found. In addition, McLeod [McLeod, D. B. (1992). Research on affect in mathematics education: A reconceptualization. In D. A. This study was realized with 36 senior class pre-service elementary teachers in an eastern university during spring term in 2011-2012 academic year. Error Determination Test, which has six problem statements about addition with fractions, was applied to pre-service elementary teachers. Participants were asked to compare addition operations with the given problem statements and to clarify errors if there were any. Research findings indicate that participants had problems in determining errors and made different errors in their explanations about the students’ errors.

The number zero is more difficult to teach and learn than other numbers. The purpose of this study was to investigate how preschool teachers perceive the number zero and design their teaching practices for it. The participants in this case study were selected through convenience sampling. The findings indicated that the majority of the participating preschool teachers perceived the number zero as a symbol and considered children's age while developing teaching practices.
