Research paper thumbnail of Mathematical models in physics: A study with prospective physics teacher

Scientific Research and Essays, Jan 1, 2010

The aims of this study are "to reveal prospective physics teachers' characterization of the relat... more The aims of this study are "to reveal prospective physics teachers' characterization of the relationship between mathematics and physics" and "to analyze their abilities to model physical phenomena". For these purposes, an achievement test consisting of two parts has been administered to 24 student teachers of physics. The first part aims to reveal their opinions about the relationship between mathematics and physics and the second part aims to determine their abilities about the construction of a model. The analysis shows that the candidate physics teachers state the role of mathematics in physics in three different ways and that although they generate their own methods for modeling physical phenomena they have serious difficulties in forming a model. As a recommendation of this study, it can be said that model and modeling process should be tackled as an object and model teaching should not content with model as a tool.

Teaching Mathematics and its Applications, Jan 1, 2010

Procedural and conceptual learning are two types of learning, related to two types of knowledge, ... more Procedural and conceptual learning are two types of learning, related to two types of knowledge, which are often referred to in mathematics education. Procedural learning involves only memorizing operations with no understanding of underlying meanings. Conceptual learning involves understanding and interpreting concepts and the relations between concepts. The relationship between these learning types has been discussed for a long time. For some researchers, procedural knowledge forms the basis for conceptual knowledge, while for others the relationship is reversed. The aims of the study reported here were first to explore the nature of students' learning in traditional differential equations (DEs) courses and second to clarify the relationship between procedural and conceptual learning. To address these aims an achievement test with 13 open-ended questions, probing procedural and conceptual learning with regard to DEs, was administered to 77 candidate mathematics teachers, enrolled in a traditional DEs course. The analysis of students' responses to the test items showed that 85% of candidate teachers gave correct responses on procedural questions whilst only 30% of them gave correct responses to the conceptual questions. These findings suggest that the candidate teachers' learning was primarily procedural in the context of traditional instruction and content and that this did not lead them to develop the conceptual knowledge needed to interpret new situations properly and to produce new ideas beyond the ones they had memorized. In addition, based upon the student levels in both procedural and conceptual learning, it was concluded that conceptual learning supports and generates procedural learning but procedural learning does not support conceptual learning.

The aim of this study is to determine the ST teachers' problems while using the alternative evaluation methods during their courses. To achieve this, semi-structured interviews have been conducted with 10 ST teachers from different parts of Trabzon during the academic year [2008][2009]. The data, analyzed qualitatively, reveals that the teachers have important difficulties in determining, using and evaluating these methods. At the end of the research, it has been concluded that besides the lack of physical infrastructure, labs and libraries, computer and other technologies in their schools, most of the teachers lack the knowledge and skills to implement these methods. The result of the study has shown that ST teachers need an adaptation process to appropriate the aims and importance of alternative evaluation methods effectively.

Researches in education have been leading to several educational theories and models in the last ... more Researches in education have been leading to several educational theories and models in the last century. As a result of this, mathematics education has been affected by this development, a series of innovations has been made in the education field, and these innovations' adaptations and effectiveness have been investigated by researchers. The theory of didactical situations in mathematics is one of these educational theories. This article aims to introduce both this theory and adidactical situations which play an imminent role in this theory and to present an application of adidactical situations to describe experiences during the different phases of this theory. For this purpose, an activity on the barycentre of a triangle was administered to eight-grade students and the stages of adidactical situation were observed and video-taped. At the end of the study, taking into account the five stages of adidactical situations students' experiences were described.
