The aim of this study is to develop a valid and reliable attitude scale in order to measure pre-s... more The aim of this study is to develop a valid and reliable attitude scale in order to measure pre-service teachers' attitudes toward material usage in classroom environment. The study was carried out with 187 pre-service teachers from Fatih Faculty of Education at Karadeniz Technical University. Validity and assessment of the 33-item attitude scale was done with a pilot study. According to the results of the pilot study, a 5-point likert-type scale of attitude towards material usage in classroom environment, consisting of 20 items and two factors was developed and administered to 187 students, who formed the sampling. The alpha internal consistence coefficient that was calculated for the reliability of the scale was found to be 0,890.

However, laboratory applications have generally been neglected in recent educational environments for a variety of reasons. In order to address this gap, this study examined the effect of a virtual chemistry laboratory (VCL) on student achievement among 90 students from three different ninth-grade classrooms (an experimental group and two control groups). Study data were gathered with pre and post chemical-changes unit achievement (CCUA) Test, laboratory equipment test (LET), and unstructured observations. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS (version 16.0). Comparisons were made within and between groups. It was concluded that the developed virtual chemistry laboratory software is at least as effective as the real laboratory, both in terms of student achievement in the unit and students' ability to recognize laboratory equipment.

Sınıf kimya öğretim programı içerisinde yer alan kimyasal değişimler ünitesi kapsamındaki (yapılandırmacı öğrenme kuramı ve Tahmin-Gözlem-Açıklama stratejisi temel alınan) deneyleri konu alan etkileşimli bir sanal kimya laboratuvarı geliştirilme sürecinin tanıtılmasıdır. Belirtilen amaç doğrultusunda sanal kimya laboratuvarı yazılımının geliştirilmesi sürecinde takip edilen temel adımlar: kimya öğretmenlerinin ihtiyaçlarının belirlenmesi, sanal laboratuvarlar ve bilgisayar destekli kimya deneylerine ilişkin kaynakların taranması, içerik analizinin yapılması, deney senaryolarının oluşturulması, yazılımın geliştirilmesi, pilot çalışmanın yapılması, kimya ve bilgisayar destekli eğitim alan uzmanlarının görüşlerinin alınması aşamalarıdır. 2009-2010 eğitim öğretim yılında asıl çalışma kapsamında uygulanarak etkililiği değerlendirilen yazılımın öğretmenlerin üzerindeki yükü hafiflettiği, zamanın daha etkin kullanılması, yapılandırmacı öğrenme yaklaşımının uygulanabilmesi ve süreci planlı yönetme gibi pek çok açıdan alana katkı sağladığı tespit edilmiştir Anahtar Kelimeler: Sanal laboratuvar, kimya laboratuvarı, yazılım geliştirme Summary: The main aim of this study is to introduce to developing process of an interactive virtual chemistry laboratory was developed based on constructivist learning theory and Prediction-Observation-Explanation strategy sampling the experiments in the chemical changes unit in 9 th grade chemistry curriculum. Along with the determined research aim, the fundamental steps followed during the development of the virtual chemistry laboratory were: determining the needs of chemistry teachers, reviewing the resources related to virtual laboratories and computer assisted chemistry experiments, conducting content analysis, setting experiment flow scripts, developing the software, performing the pilot study, collecting opinions of chemistry and computer assisted education experts. It was determined that the software, applied as the main study in 2009-2010 educational year, contributes in many ways like alleviating the workload of the teacher, letting classes use time more efficiently, facilitating the application of the constructivist learning approach and providing opportunity to manage process deliberately

ÖZET: Sanal laboratuvarlar eğitim alanında kullanılmaya başlanan oldukça yeni bir öğretim ortamıd... more ÖZET: Sanal laboratuvarlar eğitim alanında kullanılmaya başlanan oldukça yeni bir öğretim ortamıdır. Bu çalışmada ortaöğretim dokuzuncu sınıf kimya dersi kapsamında kimyasal değişimler ünitesindeki deneyleri kapsayan, yapılandırmacı yaklaşım, TGA (Tahmin-Gözlem-Açıklama) stratejisi ve öğrenci etkileşimi temel alınarak geliştirilen sanal kimya laboratuvarı (SKL) yazılımına yönelik öğrenci görüşlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Trabzon il merkezinde bulunan bir Anadolu lisesinin 9. sınıf öğrencileriyle altı hafta süresince gerçekleştirilen çalışmaya toplam 30 öğrenci katılmıştır. Nicel çalışmanın verileri araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen "sanal kimya laboratuvarı değerlendirme anketi" kullanılarak elde edilmiştir. Çalışma sonunda öğrencilerin deneyleri sanal ortamda yapmaktan zevk aldıkları, bu ortamı kullanışlı, etkili ve güvenli buldukları tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca sanal laboratuar ortamının, öğrencileri ve gerçek laboratuar sürecine ve laboratuar araç-gereçlerine karşı daha aşina kıldığı görülmüştür. In this study, it was aimed to student opinions towards the virtual chemistry laboratory (VCL) software, presenting the experiments chemical changes unit in 9 th grade chemistry curriculum, developed based on POE (Predict-Observation-Explanation) strategy and constructivist approach. The study performed with 30 ninth grade students of an Anatolian Secondary School situated in Trabzon city center, for 6 weeks. The data of this quantitative study were collected with "virtual chemistry laboratory evaluation survey" scale developed by the researcher. It was determined the students like performing experiments in virtual environment; they find the experiment effective and safe. Additionally, it was determined that virtual laboratory environment make students more acquainted with real laboratory processes, tools and equipment.

At early times they were used to prove theoretical knowledge but lately they turned into environments where students freely discover knowledge as an individual or in groups. The activities that have come up with the recent form of labs substantially contributed to training ideal students for constructivist approach, who research, inquire, test, seek solutions, wear scientist shoes and deeply reason about the concept of concern.
