Immunology is unique in comparison with other scientific disciplines in its use of animals for the production of biological materials. A vast number of animals, predominantly rabbits, goats, sheep, pigs, horses, and chickens are used as a source of polyclonal antibodies. Guinea pigs have, for many years, been used for production of complement factors, and mice are the most popular animals for monoclonal antibody production. Whenever laboratory animals are used, it is essential to make sure that they are dealt with in a way that ensures their maximal good welfare. If the use of animals is unavoidable, the animals should be of the best possible health status, maintained in a well-controlled good environment, looked after by competent staff, and used as quickly as possible. Monitoring of animal welfare relies on a sound knowledge of animal husbandry and behavior. Animals are often bought as free of a number of specified pathogenic organisms. Particularly, in immunological research, there is a need to avoid any uncontrolled stimulation or suppression of the immune system, and to have knowledge about the extent of exposure of the animals to immunogens in the environment.

It considers the ethics of animal experimentation through a complete review of European and North American legislation on the topic. It discusses alternatives to animal experiments, including the use of isolated organs, cell cultures and computer simulations. The book also examines general methods, including experimental design and statistical evalutation, non-surgical and surgical techniques, anaesthesia and post-mortem examinations. Reviews of animal models for studying diseases, cancer and toxicology are featured as well. This book is intended for pharmaceutical researchers, medical researchers, veterinarians, physiologists, toxicologists, laboratory animal associations and groups concerned about the ethics of animal experimentation.
