Using Halliday's (1978), and Searle's (1976) models, different language functions and speech acts were specifically determined and examined in high school textbooks. The results indicated that there were major insufficiencies in pragmatic representations in these books. These problems were related to inadequate coverage of different speech acts and language functions, lack of authenticity in the dialogues, inappropriate simplifications and reductions, lack of grading, unsystematic presentations, providing no meta-pragmatic information, and presenting English speech acts embedded in dialogues with Iranian culture, religion, and norms. The results indicate that material developers and textbook designers need to consider these aspects to help learners to be able to learn second language more efficiently and appropriately.

In the present study an attempt was made to compare different translators' use of shifts in a literary text. The selected theoretical framework for the present study was Vinay and Darbelnet (1995). To achieve this aim, a contrastive analysis was done on The Secret by Rhonda Byrne and its several Persian translations. The results of the study revealed that the translators use different types of shifts for a single sentence. In many cases, the translators use a combination of different kinds of shift in order to transfer an appropriate massage.

To this end, some tests have been introduced in syntax which help the linguist in diagnosing the boundaries of constituents. Within a Minimalist framework, this study aimed to analyze the efficiency of eight constituency tests, namely: coordination, ellipsis, question formation, sentence fragment, replacement, clefting, pseudo-clefting and topicalization. These had the highest frequency in important syntactic sources as means for diagnosing seven selected important constituents of the sentences, i.e., VP, DP, PP, AP, AdvP, CP and TP. We applied the tests to these categories in Persian to see which ones are most efficient and can cover a wider range of constituents. The results suggested that pseudo-clefting and topicalization are more effective and have the capability of identifying more constituents in English than in Persian. It was also concluded that, given the large number of exceptions, in general, the tests mentioned above cannot be considered as absolute tools in identifying constituents.

It focuses on the women's issues and their problems in the society and aims at overcoming their problems. In the three main waves of feminism, many feminists such as Virginia Wolf, Simone de Beauvoir, and Kate Millet aired their views in their popular and famous books. This article deals with the application of feminist criticism to The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, considering Simone de Beauvoir's ideas based on her Second Sex. Many sentences and phrases are quoted through the article to illustrate the women's weakness and the men's power, the notion usually called "men's control of the dominant discourse" in Beauvoir's words. There are some keys in the story showing that women are not satisfied with their ways of lives and try to change their current situation.

For this purpose, 35 Master of Art students both males and females studying English translation were selected from Mashhad Ferdowsi University in Iran. In order to collect data two tests were applied: one made up of questions selected from the Ph.D and M.A entrance exams together with a test of actual translation from Persian to English and the reverse. Data analysis and statistical calculations through T-TEST, one way ANOVA and Pearson Correlation revealed that Gender was an important factor on theoretical scores, while it was not an important factor on practicaltranslation (English to Persian and Persian to English translation).

Through a postmodernist study of these novels, the study attempts to disclose the differences between the traditional myth and the postmodern myth, to show borders of truth and myth, reality and illusion in the postmodern world, and to reveal the decay of myth in the postmodern cultures. What this study tries to illustrate is important in the way that it is an alarm for the ones who still believe in the traditional notions of myth. Shepard’s ideas of postmodern myth and its gradual death help the readers understand that the traditional values of some myths such as myth of the American family do not exist anymore.

It aims at investigating how problematic these punctuation marks can be and to what extent the students' familiarity with their pragmatic and metadiscourse functions can affect their translation from English to Persian. To accomplish this, twenty two graduate students of translation were selected and asked to translate some sentences from English to Persian. The results have indicated that only a minority of them were successful. The root causes of their poor performance can be traced back to the lack of contrastive study on punctuation systems of English and Persian as well as lack of familiarity with metadiscourse functions of punctuation marks.
