Blends of polypropylene/waste tire dust (PP/WTD) with and without trans-polyoctylene rubber (TOR)... more Blends of polypropylene/waste tire dust (PP/WTD) with and without trans-polyoctylene rubber (TOR) and dynamic vulcanization were prepared, and the effects of TOR and dynamic vulcanization were investigated. By using WTD of 500-710 mm, five different compositions of PP/WTD blend (i.e. 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, 50/50 and 40/60 wt%) were prepared in an internal mixer at 180 1C and 50 rpm rotor speed. The results indicate that the incorporation of TOR and dynamic vulcanization improved the tensile properties of PP/WTD blends. Chemical and oil resistance of the PP/WTD blends with TOR and dynamic vulcanization was enhanced. Scanning electron microscopy of the fractured surfaces proved that TOR and dynamic vulcanization promoted good adhesion between the PP matrix and WTD. Thermograms support the finding that TOR and dynamic vulcanization improved the interaction of PP and WTD and, hence, their compatibility.

Polysulfone (PSf) membrane has hydrophobic characteristic was blended with a hydrophilic polymer, cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP) in order to increase hydrophilicity property of pure PSf membrane. In this study, membrane casting solutions containing 17 wt% of polymer was prepared via wet phase inversion process. The pure PSf membrane was coded as PC-0. PSf/CAP blend membranes with blend composition of 95/5, 90/10, 85/15 and 80/20 wt% of total polymer concentration in the membrane casting solutions were marked as PC-5, PC-10, PC-15 and PC-20 respectively. All of the membranes were characterized in terms of pure water flux and permeability coefficient in order to study their hydrophilicity properties. The investigated results shows that increased of CAP composition in PSf blend membranes has increased pure water flux, permeability coefficient and porosity of the blend membrane which in turn formed membrane with anti-fouling property.

It is apparent that tensile properties of polypropylene-latex modified waste tyre dust (PP/WTD ML ) blends were better than those of polypropylene-unmodified waste tyre dust (PP/WTD UM ) blends. The presence of WTD ML enhanced the swelling resistance of the PP/WTD ML blends, indicating an improvement in PP-WTD ML interfacial adhesion. An improved dispersion as well as a size reduction of WTD ML was observed in the micrographs of tensile fracture surfaces. The embedded and encapsulated WTD ML elucidates the improved PP-WTD ML interaction. Moreover, the use of WTD ML did not show any diminution of the blend's thermal properties. r

The specimens were exposed to natural weathering in the northern part of Malaysia for a period of 6 months. The results show that at the same blend composition, blends with fine WTD size exhibit higher mechanical properties than that of blends with coarse WTD after exposure to natural weathering. Regardless of WTD size, the retention of tensile strength and elongation at break, E b increases with the increase in WTD content. From the exposed surface morphology, it is apparent that the blends with fine WTD and WTD-rich blends were able to withstand weathering better than blends with coarse WTD and PPrich blends. The DSC thermograms suggest that the overall drop in melting temperature (T m ) of the exposed blends decreases as the WTD content increases.

All the treated composites show an improvement in tensile strength. This indicates that the treatments using NaOH&3-APE and p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA) with addition of eco degradant and PE-g-MA improved adhesion between Alpinia galanga fiber and HDPE matrix. The Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) micrographs show the presence of a improved interaction between treated Alpinia galanga fibers and HDPE matrix with the addition of eco degradant and MA-g-PE. Thermal stability of composites was also improved for composites with treated fibers.

Moreover, the use of WTD ML did not show any diminution of the blend's thermal properties. r

Research paper thumbnail of Polypropylene-based blends containing waste tire dust: Effects of trans-polyoctylene rubber (TOR) and dynamic vulcanization

Polymer Testing, 2007

The Alpinia galanga agro waste fibers at 3, 6, 10 and 15 wt% were compounded in an internal mixer with the addition of 5 wt% MA-g-PE and eco degradant. The composite specimens were prepared using an injection molding machine. The results show that the maximum tensile strength of 33 MPa was obtained for sodium hydroxide (NaOH) & 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APE) treated fiber composites with eco degradant and MA-g-PE at 15 wt% fiber loading compared to that of pristine HDPE (28 MPa).
