by behaviourist and existentialist approaches in theories of morality and the other proposed by
Iris Murdoch, who stresses the ability to see and recognise morally significant characteristics. In
Murdoch’s opinion, a person’s moral development consists in a change in the quality of consciousness
as a result of the activity of attention in exploring moral reality. After contrasting
these two views, the author confronts Murdoch’s approach with the conception of moral development
understood along these lines as exemplified in a character of her novel The Good Apprentice.
She also puts the problem of attention into the context of Murdoch’s conception of the transcendence
of persons.

She ponders why the protagonist, a man with such heightened awareness of good and evil, at some point in his life chooses evil. She places the problem of weak will (akrasia) first into the context of the various iterations of determinism and subsequently of the considerations raised by Socrates and Aristotle. As their answers are not fully applicable to the problem of Tolstoy's titular character, she looks for an explanation to Saint Augustine's philosophy of free will.

Using the example of Guzel Yakhina’s Zuleikha, the author of this paper demonstrates how tender narration brings out the titular character’s defenselessness as a quality of the human condition. The author ponders what distinguishes Yakhina’s novel among other examples of camp or historical literature and also addresses Hélène Cixous’s concept of l’écriture feminine, concluding that the perspective of tender narration is coextensive with the feminine narration that is open to voices arriving from a multitude of perspectives. The author also demonstrates that Yakhina’s Zuleikha is an example of literature that highlights and explores the experience of a human being’s internal freedom, which is inalienable, even though its external freedom may be endanger...

At first the author presents a general outline of Murdoch’s ethics, focusing (1) on her interpretation of the relation between metaphysics and ethics and her concept of goodness and (2) her understanding of consciousness and imagination. This is followed (3) by Murdoch’s ethical dictionary in which the concepts of moral perception and (4) of attention (which Murdoch reconstructed from Simone Weil’s texts) play a most important role. Next, (5) the conception of morality as attention is set in the context of Murdoch’s neotheology and (6) her aesthetic views about art, which she conceives as a case of morals. Finally (7) the author presents three views on morality that can be derived from Murdoch’s novel The Bell.

Based on this analysis, (2) the author decides what constitutes the novel's ethical foundation and what (3) prescriptions and (4) responses can follow from it.

The author invites the reader to examine Boris Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago through the lens of wrongdoing and forgiveness. She ponders whether Lara Antipova and Yura Zhivago can justify their actions with the beauty and the force of their love. In the light of the moral consequences of their actions, she finds such justification to be impossible. In her view the novel, culminating in the main characters’ deaths, opens itself to a transcendental sphere in which wounded people are laid bare in their humanity before themselves, free of the baggage of guilt and harm, ready for conciliation.

The Aristotelian “philosophy of human affairs”1 was supposed to analyze the ethical, social, and political challenges that the Greeks faced. Genera-tions of philosophers implemented this ideal. John Locke, John Stuart Mill, Henry Sidgwick, or Immanuel Kant – these are only some of the philosophers who ex-erted influence on public life through their writings. Also active in this sphere were analytic philosophers such as Bertrand Russell, well-known for his pacifism, and Vienna Circle philosophers, who contributed to the criticism of fascist ideol-ogy in Europe by analyzing the rhetoric of Nazi propaganda. Refusing to bow to ideologies, they were always on the side of reason, sometimes with tragic results. When the Nazis came to power, many neopositivists had to escape to the USA; as a result – although Europe had politically committed philosophers (e.g. Jean-Paul Sartre) and still does have them (e....
