Russia and the West on Putin’s Mind: A Discourse Analysis of Vladimir Putin’s Speeches Through the Lens of Speech Act Theory, 2020

Today it seems like we are in a phase of mild confrontation between the two sides. Vladimir Putin, the political figure that dominates Russian politics for 20 years now, has repeatedly criticized NATO’s and the West’s activities throughout the globe, especially after his 2007 Munich speech, where, for the first time, he openly attacked NATO’s plans and practices and warned that Russia would not stay idle towards such behavior. Thirteen years after this speech and the tensions are still tight. This thesis will be an effort to understand how Vladimir Putin has viewed the relations between Russia and the Western world over his years of governing, through a discourse analysis of a set of the Russian President’s speeches during this timeline, along with the assist of Speech Act Theory, a sociological theory for understanding how spoken words may in fact produce actions. The analysis will be divided into three periods-categories, which will be separately examined and then compared to one another.

The second one, and most difficult to answer surely, is whether potential links of Kundera to exile organizations, such as the Assembly of Captive European Nations, Radio Free Europe and Council of Free Czechoslovakia, and its prominent members, like Petr Zenkl or Pavel Tigrid, exist. There will also be an in-between part to cover an ambiguous accusation by the historian Adam Hradilek of Kundera having performed the act of denunciation of a western agent to the communist police back in the 1950s to shed light on the communist past of the author and strengthen or weaken several points of this research.

It will begin with a historical exploration of the Eurasianist and the Neo-Eurasianist movements and then, it will emphasize on the point of view of this group of Russian political and social thinkers, the Eurasianists and especially their current successors, the Neo-Eurasianists, concerning what Ukraine represents for Russia. The data will be collected mainly from journals and books which will mainly be based on the thoughts of the leading figure of the Neo-Eurasianist ideology, Aleksandr Dugin, but there is also going to be an attempt to detach his thoughts on Ukraine from several speeches, debates and interviews that he delivered. Ukraine has been a central element of the Russian foreign policy during the last decades and the Crimean and Eastern Ukraine campaigns has been the peak of this Russian enthusiasm concerning the neighboring country. But what does Eurasianism and Neo-Eurasianism have to say about this entity and its historical, cultural and identity roots?

After presenting the framework and the complexity under which EU-AU relations operate on a daily basis, we shall first point out the fundamental elements of the security cooperation between the two entities and then explore the dimensions of their security cooperation in depth, based on the fundamental joint strategies and agreements of their partnership. In the end, we will proceed with an evaluation of the effectiveness of the EU-AU security cooperation by analyzing two of the most important case studies of joint security operations; The case of Somalia and the support of the EU to the African Union’s Mission for Somalia (AMISOM) and the case of the Central African Republic and EU’s support to the African Union’s Mission for the Support of Central African Republic (MISCA) through its own deployment of a separate mission, the EUFOR RCA Mission.

Alexander Sergunin, professor in the Faculty of International Relations of the Saint Petersburg State University, in his book “Explaining Russian Foreign Policy Behavior: Theory and Practice”, attempts to explore, depict and analyze post-Soviet Russia’s Foreign Policy activities and behavior, as well as describe its decision making system.
