perspective) when retrieving memories. Because patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) often report mood disturbances and past traumatic experiences, it would be plausible to expect that these patients too would retrieve higher proportions of observer memories. Therefore, and given the phenotypical variance of BPD, we examined whether vantage perspective during recall is associated with one or more
BPD symptom clusters.

Participants completed an anonymous online survey inquiring about NSSI and SSI functions, sociodemographic correlates, help seeking behaviors, and stressful life events. Lifetime prevalence of NSSI was 13.71% and SSI was 3.93%. No gender or age differences appeared between adolescents engaging in NSSI or SSI; however, differences in educational level were observed. Significant differences in functions of the behavior and number of stressful life events were noted between groups. Finally, the likelihood of receiving professional help differed between adolescents engaging in NSSI and adolescents engaging in SSI. Implications of the findings for assessment and treating NSSI and SSI are discussed.

In total, 123 patients (between 14 and 24 years), 98 mothers and 79 fathers completed the Family Assessment Device. Patients completed the Self-Injury Questionnaire-Treatment Related and the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised. No main effects were found of restrictive versus binge-eating/purging behaviour nor of presence/absence of NSSI. For the parents, a significant interaction between binge-eating/purging behaviour and NSSI emerged: Mothers and fathers reported worse family functioning in the binge-eating/purging group in presence of NSSI, whereas mothers reported worse family functioning in the restrictive group without NSSI. Parental perception of family functioning is affected by the combined presence of binge-eating/purging behaviour and NSSI. Th...

Research paper thumbnail of Promotion of an autonomy-supportive parental style in a multi-family group for eating-disordered adolescents

Journal of Family Therapy, 2014

In the inpatient unit the opportunity for patients to have autonomy and sense of choice concerning the treatment are structurally embedded. Consequently, the multi-family group promotes an autonomy-supportive parental style. This article reports on the therapeutic model of the group and its consequences for the role of the parents in the treatment of eating disorders. The process of the multi-family format treatment is also explained and clinical vignettes are given to illustrate the different therapeutic techniques. Finally, the benefits and limitations of the multi-family group are discussed.

In the present review, we present an overview of studies focusing on the relationship between temperament/personality and morbid obesity in pre-operative and postoperative bariatric surgery patients. We consider studies that focus on both a categorical and dimensional point of view on temperament/personality, as well as studies based on cross-sectional and longitudinal designs. Finally, we will integrate the research findings, discuss the implications for assessment and treatment and formulate suggestions for future research. We collected data in a sample of 128 psychiatric patients by means of self-report questionnaires measuring self-harm, psychological symptoms, personality and coping skills. Results support a continuum of self-harm such that

In a weight-bearing animal model six substitutes each were implanted in the medial tibial head of the right lower leg of adult Merino-sheep in a standardized surgical technique. After nine months the implants were harvested and prepared for histomorphological and histomorphometrical investigations (undecalcified Masson Goldner staining). For additional biomechanical testing of the specimens, non-operated bone blocks from the contralateral tibia as well as native implants served as controls. No significant differences for the maximum fracture load as well as for the yield strength were detected between harvested specimens and bone blocks from the contralateral tibia. However there were marked differences to ceramics that were not implanted. All substitutes showed osteoconduction, leading to a continuous ingrowth of new formed bone. However in the composite material soft tissue could be identified within the scaffold and there were signs of ongoing bone remodeling, nine months after implantation. The bone per tissue volume of alpha-TCP in conjunction to new bone (=percentage of trabecular bone volume plus percentage of residual substitute) was higher than for GB9N and the composite material. Nine months after implantation the percentage of residual alpha-TCP was 48%, it was 32% for GB9N and 28% for the composite. The intention of further studies should be to accelerate the degradation rates of substitutes and to improve biomechanical properties of implants by either modifying the chemical composition or combining materials with agents as, e.g. growth factors.
