stefania marzo | KU Leuven (original) (raw)
Stefania Marzo is associate professor of Italian Linguistics at the University of Leuven. Her research interests lie primarily in variationist sociolinguistics and contact linguistics. Much of her work focuses on on the emergence and diffusion of multilingual vernaculars in urban settings (ethnolectal speech styles in Flanders) and on sociolinguistic variation of Italian in and beyond Italy and. Within these two research areas she studies among others, contact-induced language variation and the relation between (de-)standardization and language ideology.

Honorifics are largely used in the Italian culture. They are polite terms of address required in many formal social encounters. They express respect and professional recognition, carry legal value and denote social hierarchy. In the same way, honorifics in Italian films are used to convey these social meanings. Recent research (Caniato, Crocco, Marzo 2015) has however shown the difficulty of translating these social meanings in subtitles. When crossing borders, some meanings of a film are accepted, while others are resisted. Acceptance and resistance influence the subtitling process and, consequently, the translation of honorifics. We will focus on the films La meglio gioventu (Giordana 2003), Malena (Tornatore...

The project investigates the linguistic effect of intensive bilingualism on Italian as a subordinate language for two generations of Italian-Dutch bilinguals who reside in Limburg, the easternmost region of Flanders, Belgium. The study examines language contact phenomena (language variation and language change) and specific speech patterns and the main purpose is to determine whether different types of grammatical phenomena (morphological, syntactic and lexical) in the speech of bilinguals are affected by language contact in the same way. It also seeks to determine whether the identified changes can be explained on the basis of the processes that are recognized in the literature (Muysken 2001; SilvaCorvalán 1994; Van Coetsem 1995) as characteristic of language contact, namely simplification and transfer. Finally, the project verifies in which way these features correlate with social factors...
