This study is part of a wider research pursued over the years and still in progress, whose aim is... more This study is part of a wider research pursued over the years and still in progress, whose aim is to highlight patterns of cross-linguistic
encoding through the interpretation of divergences in cross-linguistic categorization. The interaction among "language", "category" and "classification" is investigated along with the role of "fuzziness" (or rather "vagueness"). The extent of "context" in disambiguation and translatability is taken into consideration as is the role of "scripts and frames". A further examination of the "deictic pivot" (partly introduced in Nannini 2018) as one of the features outlining "spaces of codified knowledge" is also investigated.

This paper is a basic survey of the features of Italian learnt by Japanese learners and of Japane... more This paper is a basic survey of the features of Italian learnt by Japanese learners and of Japanese learnt by Italian learners. Analysis of instances related to phonology, semantics, lexical selection and sociopragmatics is performed in order to explore the extent of the role played by the native language both in the interpretation and in the production of the new language.

This paper deals with a Latin Language and Culture teaching experience in a Course held at a Japa... more This paper deals with a Latin Language and Culture teaching experience in a Course held at a Japanese College of Music. In spite of the existence of such courses in a few institutions, the needs of the learners are usually not analyzed and the contents offered end up being just a generic and confused explanation of notions of Latin morphology (and maybe a few notions of syntax). What is really needed, though, is not just a superficial and disorganized knowledge of the language, but how the language expresses the flow of the culture and history which have determined the importance of Latin (and Greek) not only in the field of Music, but also in the very development of the Western world. Priorities must be established in order to show these essential factors, which usually remain shrouded in mystery because no key of interpretation in given. The doubts and incomprehension of the learners provided the opportunity of designing a syllabus for beginners and realizing that this approach could be broadened and offered to anyone who is interested in the Latin language without prior knowledge. The learner can enjoy the beauty conveyed by the language and in so doing build the basis for the appreciation of the whole Classical Culture.

"Possession" seems to be quite straightforward in its cognitive extent, but it does not seem to b... more "Possession" seems to be quite straightforward in its cognitive extent, but it does not seem to be as univocal in terms of linguistic encoding. Specifically, the Japanese language shows different structures which in Italian request the use of "avere" (“to have”): they may be existential predicates (requiring a lexical selection between animate and inanimate existentials), copular predicates (which previous studies seem to convey into the existential ones), and the "motte-iru" construction (i.e. the durative-resultative form of the Japanese verb "motsu" “to hold”).
"Motte-iru" is usually seen as the lexical item corresponding to "avere", but it by no means represents the default or basic encoding as "avere" does in Italian (or other languages). The paper takes into consideration both theoretical aspects and actual data shown in the course of the acquisition process and aims to shed some light on the underlying criteria employed in the selection of the structures requested by the two languages. Consequently, it also inquires whether such criteria may represent a useful tool when teaching Italian as a Foreign Language to Japanese learners.

The linguistic encoding of social relationships has always represented an important part of the r... more The linguistic encoding of social relationships has always represented an important part of the research on the Japanese Language. In this paper, the subject is systematically examined and the research findings achieved by Japanese scholars are introduced, along with the criteria at work when speakers interact.
Criteria such as "symmetry" and/or "asymmetry" perceived by Japanese speakers and related parameters operating in the selection of the appropriate encoding are thoroughly explored. Contextual factors (such as, for ex., the relative social positions of the speakers, their age, the environment in which the interaction takes place, etc.) are also taken into consideration in order to determine the manner in which such factors operate in linguistic encoding.
In this perspective, an exhaustive and systematic explanation of the linguistic forms which come into play is also given.
The paper not only investigates how criteria such as the aforementioned ones emerge when speakers use the well known “honorific” language, but it also points out how they play the same role when the speakers select its opposite, the “non honorific” language in all its alternatives and nuances, as appropriate.
In so doing, it shows how clear criteria work in both directions and rule the selection of what is perceived as the appropriate linguistic encoding.

The information conveyed by the presence of the determinate / indeterminate article or the lac... more The information conveyed by the presence of the determinate / indeterminate article or the lack thereof represents one of the difficulties that Japanese learners encounter when studying a foreign language which makes use of such distinction. Moreover, languages which use this kind of reference do not always share the same rules, which confuses the learners even more.
In this paper the problems related to the presence/absence of the article and the zero article are examined both in their theoretical extent (comparing “if” and “how” is such information conveyed in Japanese and Italian) and in its practical extent, through the writing production of Japanese learners at various levels of study. Examples of teaching materials which have been actually tested in class complete the paper.

The aim of this paper, which is based on more than twenty years of experience and research in the... more The aim of this paper, which is based on more than twenty years of experience and research in the field of Italian language Learning and Teaching in Japan, is a syllabus designed for Japanese beginners.
Although partially coinciding with syllabi designed for speakers of other languages, a syllabus destined to Japanese speakers who approach the Italian language in their country (as a FL and not a SL) requires elements which are not usually included.
The authors believe that it must take into consideration factors at all levels of the linguistic analysis (from phonetics to pragmatics) and cultural analysis, such as what is to be considered “common sense” and how it leads to “preferred interpretation of utterances”, a process which can be quite different in the two languages, no matter the level of linguistic knowledge the learners have.
All these factors provide a learning experience which - if certainly limited - represents an important step in itself, because it allows them to perform a certain degree of undisturbed communication with Italian natives, but it also offers a reliable basis for further study, be it linguistic or as requirement for scholarships in Italian institutions and academic research.

It is the sequel of a previous work which was mainly concerned with the linguistic devices reflecting
social behavior in Japanese. The author is interested in showing how appropriate subjects are selected for discussion in the two cultures. The aim of the paper is to try to provide a possible explanation of the underlying cultural patterns at work in both languages, by introducing the shapes they assume linguistically
and noting to what extent they do so during an interaction. It also introduces the term "ethnicity" (which is different from "ethnocentrism") as a useful factor in the process of interpretation and comprehension of a different culture.
